This was by far the best pretest that I have seen all year

This was by far the best pretest that I have seen all year. The explanations are practically on a level with UWORLD and were very helpful for review during the last couple of weeks in the clerkship. The questions are relevant to the topics you will see covered on the shelf and fill in the small gaps left behind by UWORLD. I would highly suggest buying this book. For the shelf I used First Aid Step 2 CK (all of the sections except pediatrics, ob/gyn, psych, ambulatory, and emergency), UWORLD (all IM questions), and this book and I scored a 98 on the shelf.

Love can still be fun the second time around!

Luke and Maddie are an older couple with grown kids out of the house. They are each lonely after a divorce and a death and need another person to care for. I like the fact that they aren't young anymore but have lived their lives and still find fun and excitement after the first glow of love. Luke and Maddie meet through an online dating service and get to know each other slowly, before ever meeting in person. Luke lets Maddie know that he expects a domestic discipline relationship and Maddie agrees to give it a try. Though Maddie has never been spanked before she trusts Luke to care for her and not abuse her. Luke is an honorable man and loves and cares for Maddie with his whole heart. Maddie learns a few lessons along the way and she and Luke create a loving and intimate relationship that will last them for the rest of their lives. That is a true love story and I really enjoyed the book!

she feels she has poor judgement skills

He gets excited when he spanks his woman, she gets excited for what comes after. I see a spoiled man, when he doesn't get his way he spanks. He needs to feel important, so he spanks his wife, she feels she has poor judgement skills. Wow make your woman feel stupid and useless.

I can't stand books that depict women as needing a man to spank them because they need to be disciplined like a child. It's strange that the man never needsthe disciplin. If this was presented as a sexual need then it wouldn't bother me. I would say go for it, but this just comesacross as the poor pitiful woman who must be spanked with a belt in order for her to remember not to cuss or get angry aka" "bratty". I guess the men in these stories are just perfect and do not need beating with a belt. Or maybe this is just someone' s excuse to promote a reason fo abuse.

FOR ITS TIME - A MASTERPIECE!

(A 4.5 star effort to me) As the owner of the 3 sister publications, this volume (the first in the series) attempts to cover a lot of ground within its slim dimensions - 18 different aircraft types to be exact, in approximate order of introduction to operational service.

Of necessity the result is very much a brief developmental and operational history of each type, but the information is generally accurate and reliable (we're talking a 1957 publication here). You'll certainly find more comprehensive information about all of the aircraft covered in more recent publications, but William Green laid the groundwork in this pioneering effort. Each type is well illustrated (all B&W but who cares), with reasonably comprehensive side profiles of major sub-types as well as a highly detailed 3-view artwork. Even 50+ years on, many of the photographs have not found their way into more recent publications.

This was arguably the first (and very successful) attempt to cut through the wartime and post-war propaganda, nationalistic hype etc. to objectively lay bare the strengths and weaknesses of the respective designs.

Covering 6 British, 4 US, 3 Japanese, and 5 German types, this volume aims high and rarely misses - the original benchmark publication.

Not that easy to find, but if you're interested in the classic aircraft of WW2 do yourself a favour and chase this one up. You won't be disappointed.

Famous Bombers of WW2 parade

Being already published in 1959, and again in 1960 and 1975, this book was for years one of the standard references about WW2 bomber aircraft and a companion volume to "Famous Fighters of the Second World War". Since 1975 however, there has also substantially more been published about WW2 bombers than between 1945 and 1975. These two books however still give an excellent overview of the main types that flew with all sides during the last World War and were among the first to do so. The mere fact that you can still buy them shows how good the concept -and content!- still is. Modern readers might be dissapointed by the lack of colour though.

The 36 tales here, he says, are distinguished by a similar narrative durability and stand up to the classic stories of that earlier generation. No argument. By American writers exclusively (the earlier collection was one-third English and Irish), the offerings are arranged alphabetically by author, from James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" to "The Liar" by Tobias Wolff. Between is an assortment of modern classics: Doctorow's powerful and lyric story of betrayal, "Willi," Flannery O'Connor's chilling "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," Roth's "The Conversion of the Jews" and Arthur Miller's near-perfect "The Misfits." Other pleasures lie in the wisdom and dignity that mark "Talk of Heroes" by Carol Bly, in the characteristic energy of Elkins's "A Poetics for Bullies," in the spare surprise of David Quammen's "Walking Out" and in the views of modern mall life from Bobbie Ann Mason, Joyce Carol Oates and Jayne Anne Phillips. Then, choosing stories published between 1953 and 1966, presumptuously proclaiming it as "the most climatic, and traumatic, period in American literary history," they select 36 stories, not all of which are excellent and few that might be considered "masterpieces." Interlarded with fine tales by Baldwin, Le Guin, Malamud, Arthur Miller, and Flannery O'Connor are stories by such contemporary favorites as E. L. Doctorow and Bobbie Ann Mason that are above averagebut can they truly be considered enduring masterpieces? Unfortunately, the editing is minimal, omitting even mini-biographies of the authors. This may be the last anthology of stories, from the 1950-90s, with a narrative and a punch, as distinct from the self-reflective genre that has followed. Particularly memorable were: Carol Bly’s Talk of Heros about Willi, the Norwegian war hero who held up under the tender mercies of two Gestapo torturers with knee drills long enough for his colleagues in the destruction of a munitions factory to escape in a small boat to a waiting British submarine, an experience that left him a permanent drunk, shortly after the war being sent to address a Norwegian immigrants society in St. Paul; Richard Ford’s Rock Springs which chronicles the aimlessness and casual criminality of the lower class in the West; Arthur Miller’s The Misfits about men without a future chasing runty inbred wild horses out of the mountains to sell to a catfood plant for just enough to pay for a night’s drinking in Bowie; Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find about murderous backwoods weirdos in North Georgia presages James Dickey’s later Deliverance; David Quammen’s Walking Out is a rousing adventure story of a divorced mountain man taking his Chicago teenage son on a hunting trip in the Montana mountains that quickly turns into a disaster involving grizzly bears, snow and the accidental shooting of the father who is carried for 2 days the 8 staggering miles downhill (dead) by his son in blinding snow; and John Updike’s The Christian Roommates about oddly paired freshmen roommates at Harvard, one of whom an A-student that growing up on a plan to secede his father as the doctor in a small town in South Dakota and the other a D-student resisting the draft who ended up a professional agitator and opponent to authority in its various forms.

Literature In Your Pocket

There are so many short story collections, many of which contain some of the same selections represented here. What sets this small paperback volume apart is that it is truly portable and can be carried in a jacket pocket when traveling or commuting. It has remarkable stories by a wide selection of American writers. My favorite is Flannery O'Conner's A Good Man Is Hard To FInd but there are many more. This is a risk free purchase if ever there was one. Eight bucks for some of the best samples of short fiction ever written.

Fascinating Collection

I'm 2/3 through this collection and often find myself riveted. Sometimes I'm forced to hold my breath in near shock as tension explodes through the words on the page. Other times I find myself marveling at a turn of phrase, a lyrical construction or a connection back to a bit of foreshadowing. I've found myself laughing out loud. Out of curiosity, I've researched each author after reading their story. Gaining a better understanding of their backgrounds and careers has enriched the experience tremendously. Getting a feeling for where the story came from makes their stories that much more powerful. I'm studying these works in order to improve my own writing skills, and I'm inspired.

This is a very clever novel, and although it features the usual medical-thriller device, the deadly conspiracy, it's a far cry from the Robin Cook–style conglomeration of cardboard characters and chase scenes. This one is more in the Michael Palmer vein: well-drawn characters, a smart story, plenty of suspense, and even a little commentary on the nature of the medical profession. Excellent second novel

I'm not usually a fan of medical thrillers, but gave Joshua Spanogle's Isolation Ward a try and was glad I did. This guy can write! Hero Nate McCormick is a great flawed protagonist with a unique voice and someone who is easy to identify with. In Flawless, McCormick is back and Spanogle has managed to avoid the sophomore curse, returning with a novel just as good (if not better) than his first.

Nate has relocated to the West Coast to pursue a relationship with the girlfriend he reconnected with during his initial case (chronicled in Ward). He's jobless and hasn't found an apartment and his aimless state has started to wear on the burgeoning relationship. Into this state of things comes an old friend from his student days who wants Nate's help with something. But before Nate can find out what it is, his friend Murph is murdered, along with his wife and two children, plunging Nate into a complicated mystery swirling around a biotech company in the South San Francisco hills, coupled with Chinese gangsters and a series of photographs of women and men, faces disfigured by an agressive facial cancer.

Nate is warned off, his girlfriend is attacked, and several of the people in the photographs are killed in a variety of shocking ways, but McCormick just can't give up, feeling he owes something to the friend he lost track of. This is an excellent, fast-moving novel with three-dimensional, believable characters. Nate suffers for his investigation and his feelings of rage and helplessness are palpable. And his life continues to develop on the sidelines, in the manner of the best current detective fiction. Spanogle is a truly talented writer and I'm very much looking forward to his next novel. Flawless is very highly recommended!

3.25 stars: Fun page-turner for Robin Cook fans

I purchased this off-the-shelf because Booklist on the cover promised it "Could give Michael Chricton a run for his money. Skilled storytelling" and because it sounded like a unique concept - "Perfect patients, perfect victims, a medical nightmare come true".

With a likeable, but flawed main character who uses humor to offset stress, page-turning action, a host of REALLY, REALLY bad guys and bureaucratically challenged government agents, there's no doubt that the "Skilled storytelling." part is true.

There are a few flaws that keep this book for me from being more than just a slightly above average, fun page-turner.

1. Over the top characters and action - it's fun to read over-the-top sometimes, but while I liked and despised appropriate characters I never really cared when something good or bad happened to any of them.

2. The cover and title of the book (not to mention the blurb on the back) gives away what it takes Nate our hero - 289 pages to figure out. Fortunately, enough page-turning action and a sense of how you don't really know how it will all play out keeps you reading up to that point. It would be better if you didn't know exactly what every clue meant, so long before him.

3. Big over-the-top ending. It's a pet peeve of mine lately - how decent thrillers turn into cartoonish VERY, VERY BAD GUYS against GOOD GUY with impossible odds doing things that stretch far, far beyond the believable.

Bottom Line: Spanogle weaves a decent tale that will keep you turning the pages. He's not the next Micheal Chricton, though. He's more like the next Robin Cook - with his fun, over-the-top medical thrillers. And, if you like Robin Cook medical thrillers, the more you're bound to like this one - it's right up there with many of his.

Surprisingly good thriller with character

I read his previous book, and was a little annoyed by the main character's persona, but "Nate" and every other part of the book was very much improved. Easily the best book I have read this year. Deep and well developed... more believable and not a plot that you can figure out quickly.

I highly recommend the audiobook on CD or at [...]... Scott Brick really brings this book to life.

Great detailed outlines!

Years ago I had a copy of this book and was delighted to see that it was now put in digital format on Kindle. These are the best outlines of the old and New Testament I have seen from anyone. There are lots of scripture references to go along with Gibbs outlined points.

I used this book for my course contact mechanics. My instructor and I loved this book a lot. Very organized presentation of the topics. Very much recommended for anyone doing research in contact mechanics.

great reference

if you want to learn about hertz contact. this is THE book.
i found it really interesting.
organization was sort of weird though, when trying to compare the different cases it can be confusing. if you are working on a problem and looking for an appropriate formula, you have to dig around to make sure all the assumptions were right compared to another very similar formula. but, sort of the nature of the topic.
i cant think of a better book on this subject.

A Highly Recommended Title, as Entry Level Textbook

Excellent review of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian Contact problems. I highly recommend this book for those who are having their first contact with the subject. Grad students will find it useful and clear, but I'm not sure that undergrads will have an easy time handling the book, or the subject, for that matter.

The author ot the book, Cajun Self Taught, the late Rev. Jules O. Daigle, narrates in English and pronounces in Cajun French the lessons from the book. These audio lessons were recorded by the author as a companion aid to the book of the same name, but even without the book it would still be very helpful to anyone wishing to learn to understand and speak Cajun French. The original recordings are on four cassette tapes, and these tapes have been mastered into this set of three compact discs.

A good Cajun tutorial if you already know standard French

Probably the most important feature of this book is its existence - without the work of people like Rev. Daigle Cajun French might die out entirely. That said I'm not sure that I entirely agree with all of the good father's opinions, starting with his decision to call the language Cajun rather than Cajun French. I've known my share of Cajuns that failed French at LSU but I suspect that's because they were taking it in an attempt to get out having to study a foreign language and consequently didn't put much effort into their studies. Many, if not most, of the differences in grammar and pronunciation with standard French that Father Daigle points out are common features of spoken colloquial French in France today, particularly among rural people in the parts of France where Cajuns originate. The biggest difference between the languages is in vocabulary and as Father Daigle points out, this is a natural outgrowth of over two centuries of life in Louisiana separated from standard French and being surrounded by an English speaking country. The fact that Cajuns speak of "les pickup-trucks" and such is not sufficient to constitute a separate language. Placed in a room together, a Cajun and a Frenchman will quickly figure out how to communicate and where they have difficulties it will most likely be because of differences in American and French culture rather than the language. My father can relate a story of a French engineer from the utility company in Paris arriving in New Orleans for a conference. She was able to converse quite freely in French with the Cajun engineer who picked her up at the airport although they used English to conduct business, as the Cajun engineer did not know the "correct" French electrical engineering terminology.
With that said, I feel that if you speak Cajun French then you probably don't need the book (although the dictionary might be useful) and unless you live down in Cajun country or can study Cajun French at LSU or one of the other universities in Louisiana that offer it, it would be best to study standard French first and then use the book to see what the differences are. This book simply doesn't constitute a language course either alone or with the dictionary and tapes and there just aren't enough resources available to make the study of Cajun French practical without resorting to some standard French references.

Speak Cajun the easy way!

I had the book, but also purchased this audio. Rev. Daigle starts with the phonics, how to pronounce correctly, and the differences with Cajun and Traditional French. For those of us who learn by hearing and doing, this is a must. As Cajuns, this is the perfect way to revive our culture.

BIG BOOK

My first impression of this book was about its size. It is big, REALLY BIG. I mean in physical size. You are not going to be able to throw this book into your backpack and carry it with you as you travel. There will be no pulling it out to read on the train or in bed before going to sleep (unless you want to use it as pillow). Currently it is the biggest book I own. Keep in mind that I don't think the size is a bad think, just an inconvenient thing.

This book assumes that the reader is somewhat already familiar with Cajun French. The author goes a long way in trying to get the point accross to the reader that there is nothing wrong with Cajun French. This is likely a response to the U.S. government's policy of trying to prevent the use of French in Louisiana that continues to this day. It is also likely a response to many of the French speakers who attempt to constantly correct Louisiana French speakers in grammar and speach. Rev. Daigle takes the possition that there is nothing wrong with the way Louisiana French is used in Louisiana if communication is taking place. If French people from France don't think it is correct "French" then it must instead be a New Language. The book looks to Louisiana French speakers to be the buyers and promotes itself as the text book they should have learned from in school if it weren't for unjust laws that prevent the teaching of French.

If you don't already know French or do not have access to a primer or grammar text this book would be tough for you. Getting a teacher would help a LOT. The book focusses on the building of vocabulary and idiom usage and doesn't give basic material for complete beginners. The intended audience of this book again are Louisiana French speakers and this book attempts to get them literate and well spoken in a language they already know. One of the best features of this book is the phonic code that shows a lot of work. However, this is yet another English to French phonic system to get to the correct French pronunciation. The tapes that should also be purchased help a great deal to get the hang of the phonic system.

The Cajun French presented in this book is essentially regular French that is intelligible to any other French speakers. This book is a great resource to get into the mood of Cajun French once basic French is achieved. The big lesson to learn from this book is that you shouldn't try to correct Louisiana French speakers or try to stop French from being spoken or they just might start calling their language a new language and not listen to you.

I had higher hopes

This May-December romance could've been better told. The romance between Maggie and Elliot took a bit too long to develop. We learn quite a bit about Maggie and the torch she'd carried all these years for Robert, Elliot's father. But we learned very little about Elliot and his emotional path towards this love for Maggie, the woman who was his father's first love. It's still a good and easy read, but it lacked the depth in character and emotion that I was hoping for.

First Book I've Read By This Author

Not what I expected from the author of a book which was made into a movie by Hallmark, "Candles On Bay Street" Reading about that movie, which I haven't seen, was what led me to investigate the author, and I decided to read this book before the other. I wasn't expecting fairly graphic sex scenes. Not what I'm interested in reading. Won't be buying hers again.

I had this book some years back, loved the story and shared it at my office and didn't see it again for over a month, one lady after the other shared it with someone else.
