He doesn't just survey the history of the war on drugs and its targeted population within the inner cities of America, he views it through the prism of an artistic form that both reflects and comments on the conflict between law and urban society. Good Lit. Class Book

This book was used in my college English Lit. class to help students be more critic of things that they read, whether it be a textbook or a magazine article. Most of the essays in the book have major flaws. The one that I remember the best was written by Dick Clark and was about Elvis Presley. Clark makes the comment that Elvis didn't write his own songs, which is untrue (as blanket statements tend to be). Anyway, Elvis wrote at least 2 hits, one with Vera Matson (Love Me Tender) and another with Otis Blackwell (Don't Be Cruel).
Though many of these essays are poorly written, this is a good textbook for developing with critical reading skills.

Mirror On America = P.O.S.(negative connotation)

Obviously, most of these writers spent too much time in front of the mirror while blabbing on about nothing, after having read these essays. They go on and write about blatant issues, most of them have too much time on their hands. They go on and blab about nothing. These essays shouldn't be given the light of day. Do not attempt to read or buy this book. Don't even give it a glimpse at the bookstore or library. It is not worth your precious time. It certainly wasted mine, only because I had to use this book for my Composition II course in college. It is that bad, and not worth a single penny. Mirror On America is nothing more than a piece of "FILL IN YOUR WORD."

David Brauer is a freelance writer and the Minnesota correspondent for Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune. An award-winning journalist, he is a contributing editor for Mpls.St.Paul magazine.

Nellie Stone Johnson is a major force in Minnesota and national politics. In this lucid oral history from Brauer, the Minnesota correspondent for Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune, she modestly reflects on her campaign during most of the 20th-century to improve educational and job opportunities and health care. Johnson recounts her prosperous farm beginnings with a father who organized other farmers in the face of corporate greed, racism and regionalism. One of eight children, she explains the credo of her clan, which refused to be rigidly defined simply by being African-American, as evidenced by her father's involvement in progressive and New Deal politics (largely defined by white, Southern Democrats) at a time when most African-Americans still voted for the party of Lincoln. Influenced by her father's activism, Johnson later became a union organizer, enduring two failed marriages that fell victim to her single-minded devotion to her work. She commends FDR's administration for the commitment to end federal discrimination, but openly admits that racism played a major role in her own decision not to run for Congress. After her union pals ousted her from office because of her left-wing leanings, she became a seamstress while retaining an abiding interest in politics. Age did little to slow her down as she swapped ideas with Thurgood Marshall, served a long stint with the Democratic National Committee from 1979 to 1988, toured Africa and battled with white feminists over the inclusion of women of color in the ERA fight. Brauer skillfully conveys the story of an inspiring and noble woman, still active in her 90s, who has made every minute of her life count.

A social activist, labor organizer, "third-generation feminist," Johnson has devoted her entire life to political change. Now 95 years old, she is still busy, dictating her life story. Raised by farming parents who valued education, hard work, and equal rights, she was an activist from the day she learned to speak. She brought on change by organizing labor unions in the days when being affiliated with unions was dangerous. After unions were accepted in work environments, she was free to pursue more public activities, such as politics. Although she did not graduate from college, she is a lifelong learner and holds an honorary degree from St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University. Because the book is presented as an oral history, and Johnson has a tendency to ramble, it could use a bit of editing for organization, but on the whole, it is a fascinating look into the life of a powerful, energetic woman. This book has a lot of useful information but could be a little more reader-friendly
One word of warning - the entire content of this book is to be found word-for-word in section IV of the Berne & Levy textbook "Physiology". Don't make the mistake I made and buy them both !

a good introductory book

Benefit of this book is only if you do not have the physiology book by the same author or if you want to carry around a section of the huge book. By itself the book is very clear in explaning cardiac cycles and rest of the hemodynamics. Hearth sounds forget it, ECG or ECG graphs, forget it but whatever is explained is explained in easy terms whit some nice diagrams/figures.It is expensive book per page compared to physiology book.
