Great BooK!

This was a text used in class, and while the teacher did mostly lecturing without the text, it was a great resource-easy to understand, and highly applicable. THe text does a great job of really explaining the material in a clear and concise manner.

pleasantly surprised

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.

She is the author of Image Art Workshop and Glorious Glue: Art with Adhesives and co-author of The Complete Photo Guide to Creative Painting. Guhin teaches workshops and does demonstrations internationally. She is also a contributing editor at Arts & Activities Magazine and blogs at mixedmediamanic.blogspot.com. She lives in South Dakota. Geri Greenman is an artist and retired art educator. The art is beautiful; the instruction, not so much.

I love the art used to illustrate this book. It is truly beautiful, balanced in color and composition, and has unusual uses of household items in the making of it. Obviously, the two authors are very good artists and are quite adept at evoking emotion in their works.

However, they are not very good at telling other artists how they do what they do.

Most of the instruction for every technique they present is so briefly presented (at most a paragraph or three) that important details are left out. For example, in the instructions on using waxed paper as a resist, they don't tell you whether to put the paper on the substrate wax side down or up before heating it with an iron. Now, yes, obviously one would put it face down, but it would have taken three words to express that detail. Or, the sentences which state: "Many collage artists use treated papers as elements in their paintings. Geri rubs silver polish or sandpaper on magazine papers laid over stencils." There is no mention made of what this technique does exactly, and the paintings used to illustrate this do not make clear where the technique was used, leaving the reader unsure exactly of what the author is trying to convey.

As inspiration, the art in this book is amazing.

Just don't expect the authors to explain very well what they are doing when they are creating their works.

About the Author
Ruth P. Saunders, PhD, is an professor emerita in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Saunders has 25 years of research and practice experience in conducting program, policy, and practice change in organizational settings, including preschools, schools, after-school settings, children’s group homes, and faith-based settings. Her roles in these projects, which include eight large-scale interventions, have encompassed using multi-level conceptual models to develop a comprehensive model of organizational environments, constructing scales and indexes to assess contextual factors and implementation processes, addressing challenges involved in intervention design and implementation in field-based settings, and designing and carrying comprehensive intervention implementation monitoring. She has authored or co-authored numerous publications based on her research. Dr. Saunders also has 28 years of teaching experience with master’s and doctoral level courses in program planning, program evaluation, process evaluation and implementation monitoring, and interventions targeting physical and social environments.

A wonderful resource for researchers and practitioners

This is a first of its kind book from a leading authority in implementation monitoring and process evaluation. Long the 'stepchild' of evaluation (which itself get's short shrift in the public health community), implementation monitoring is essential to quality improvement efforts for community-based interventions. Let's face it, your program is not going to work perfectly the first time (or the second, third...), so you should have a well developed plan for collecting data that you can use to figure out what went wrong or to fine tune your program. This book is written in plain language, contains many informative real-life examples, and presents many useful templates for your work. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have known and worked with Dr. Saunders for years, but this is truly a wonderful resource that I'm very happy she finally had the time to write. If you implement programs or interventions in community settings, you should purchase this book.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS ---- EVER

I have loved Dave Barry for years -- and I added this book to my Kindle. There are times when I need to read something that will put me onto the floor rolling and laughing so hard my eyes are tearing up. This book will do just that.

If you really want to have fun -- do an oral reading with a group of friends -- choose one section and try to read it aloud. Honestly, you will not be able to get through it without breaking out into a severe case of the giggles.

He is funny -- witty -- snarky -- sarcastic -- brilliant. I love him.

Public speaking made easy.

For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book are easy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues important for a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows the student to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the course without presenting an information overload in the beginning and without holding all of the useful information until the end. I think that this book is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that would like to improve their public speaking skills.

Not the best...

I have used in the past (and currently using) this publication for my Presentational Speaking for Engineering students and it's the only public speaking book that we have seemed to use in our Communication Studies Dept for this particular course. I am not sure why there is WAY too much "rhetoric" involved in this book. This book could use some tips for ESL students and could be geared a bit less towards rhetoric students and more towards a practical emphasis on presentational speaking. Especially when it comes to professional conferences and verbals on qualifying exams. Out of all the other public speaking texts, I find this one to be non-accessible, and out-of-touch with non-rhetoric students. But...it gets the job "done."

To this end, he examines the difference between intellectual virtues and intellectual faculties, talents, temperaments, and skills, develops a "personal worth" account of the nature of an intellectual virtue, contrasts this account with several others, and provides analyses of two individual virtues: namely, open-mindedness and intellectual courage. The second main goal is to account for the role that reflection on intellectual character virtues should play within epistemology at large. Here Baehr defends three main claims. The first is that the concept of intellectual virtue does not merit a central or fundamental role within traditional epistemology. The second is that it does, nonetheless, merit a secondary or background role in this context. The third is that intellectual character virtues and their role in intellectual life can form the basis of an approach to epistemology that is distinct from but complementary to traditional epistemology. Finally, Baehr examines the relation between intellectual and moral virtues.

In the President's Secret Service

Much of the content was very interesting. It was filled with fascinating tidbits about Presidents and their families. Many of us hold the Secret Service in high regard. They perform extremely well in often thankless circumstances. However, in much of the book, the author expressed his displeasure with the salaries, the organization, the working conditions, and generally the lack of appreciation of the Secret Service. At some point, I began to wonder if the author had written the book in an attempt to bring to light the mistreatment of the Secret Service, or to write a fascinating story of life as an agent and the people they protect. Having said that, I am glad that I listened to the book.

Having read the book as well, I was happy to see that this was available in audio format as well. There are many things that the author reveals which bear repeating. Having the audio book allows me to re-absorb the truthful information, while relaxing at home. I wish that all good books also had the option of and audio recording.....I'm sure that their sales would jump tremendously, since most people don't take the time to read these days.

To many contemporaries the narrative may read too much like a technical manual, but the author’s concern is for posterity, when the technical manuals may be lost or dispersed and knowledgeable participants have passed on. The narrative approach was largely predicated on questions that might well be asked by future generations: How were the Saturns made? How did they work?

A Superb Book by a Superb Aerospace Historian

This thorough and well-written book gives a detailed but highly readable account of the enormously complex process whereby the Marshall Space Flight Center under the direction of Wernher von Braun developed the launch vehicles used in the Apollo program to send humans to the Moon. Based on exhaustive research and equipped with extensive bibliographic references, this book comes as close to being a definitive history of the Saturn rocket program as is ever likely to appear. Moreover, it is not simply a technical history but covers the decision-making process that lay behind the technological development, making it not just a history of hardware development but also an analysis of technical management and organization. As one reviewer said in "Air University Review" while reviewing the original edition of this book: "This volume is just one of many excellent histories produced by government and contract historians for the NASA History Office....The book is enhanced by many excellent appendixes and charts, and it has a thorough essay on sources and documentation....Author Roger Bilstein...gracefully wends his way through a maze of technical documentation to reveal the important themes of his story; rarely has such a nuts-and-bolts tale been so gracefully told." I can only add my "amen" to that assessment.

The Complete Story Of The Saturn Family

This book is the most complete history of the Saturn launch vehicle family available. Author Roger Bilstein wrote this as an official history for NASA in the late 1970s, and it was originally published in 1980. This edition is paperbound and is published by the University Press of Florida. I was tempted to give the book five stars, but ultimately two things lowered it to four. First, the illustrations are quite poor. All are black and white and most are public domain images that are of low quality. Many are taken from much larger sources and compressed so that the legends and details are virtually or completely impossible to discern. There are many better illustrations available, and there is no reason that a modern reprint of this book should have such inferior illustrations, especially when such complex (and difficult to visualize) machinery is being discussed. The second and more minor reason for the loss of a star is due to the extremely annoying use of metric units (newtons, etc.) throughout the book, which was a misdirected Carter administration whim in vogue when this was written. The problem is not with the units themselves, but rather that all the original units the program worked with were English, and after conversion the numbers are extremely cumbersome to digest and work with: as an example I opened the text randomly to page 119 (which deals with F-1 thrust chamber and furnace brazing,) and found this example, which is typical, but not the worst: "the F-1 was designed to burn its propellants at approximately 79000 newtons per square centimeter (1150 pounds per square inch) at the injector face...." Given that virtually all other sources (and all original sources) cite English units, this is a needless complication that should have been revised.

Having noted the negatives, this book has a lot of positives: it has extremely detailed history on all the Saturn program iterations, including the often neglected Saturn 1 and 1B models. It also discusses proposed but unflown Saturn derivatives, and of course the mighty Saturn V. The book presents a background on previous programs and key personnel and developmental and design choices and rationale; the discussion of the pros and cons of cryogenic propellants in various applications is especially well written. Following this the different models of Saturn vehicle are detailed to include all stages, engines, systems, and Instrument Units (which were fairly similar throughout the program.)

There is enormous effort expended to detail the histories of the various stages and the individual histories of the individual rocket engines built. Several missions are examined in great detail, most notably AS-506, which was, of course, Apollo 11. After the discussion of the technical details of the Saturns, Bilstein presents an excellent examination of the logistics of Apollo and the management techniques used to oversee the design, construction, checkout, and launch of the vehicles. The book concludes with a treasure trove of appendices full of technical and other data, which serious space historians will find of enormous assistance.

This is overall a great book, and I recommend it highly to anyone serious about space history. It is not casual reading for most people, but is extremely well detailed, and were it not for the illustration issues (and metric units, to a lesser extent) this book would easily have been awarded five stars.

Textbook account of the buiding & operation of the Saturn...

Being the avid manned spaceflight reader that I am, this book was a gold-mine. The history of not only the Saturn V is covered here, but also the earlier (less powerful) Saturn I and IB as well as the early proposals for other Saturn launch vehicles. Then, if that's not enough, you get stage-by-stage and engine-by-engine technical explanations along with each components' history. Marvelous! I've only been able to find this book at libraries, (unless you want to spend hundred[s] of dollars for collectable editions online) but, if you're an Apollo program or Saturn V afficienado, it's worth looking for. Highly recommended!
