About the Author
Christopher Negus has been working with Unix systems, the Internet, and (most recently) Linux systems for more than two decades. During that time, Chris worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Unix System Laboratories, and Novell, helping to develop the Unix operating system. Features from many of the Unix projects Chris worked on at AT&T have found their way into Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, and other Linux systems.
Chris is the author of all editions of what started out as the Red Hat Linux Bible, which because of the name changes of Red Hat’s Linux projects has evolved into the book you are holding. Most recently, Chris co-authored multiple books in the Linux Toolbox series: Fedora Linux Toolbox, Ubuntu Linux Toolbox, Mac OS X UNIX Toolbox, SUSE Linux Toolbox, and BSD UNIX Toolbox (Wiley Publishing). Besides that, Chris authored the Linux Bible 2009 Edition and co-wrote the Fedora Bible 2010 Edition, CentOS Bible, Linux Troubleshooting Bible, and Linux Toys II for Wiley Publishing. Chris also authored Live Linux CDs and co-authored the Official Damn Small Linux Book, as part of the Negus Software Solutions Series.
Today, Chris works as a Linux instructor for Red Hat, Inc. and has achieved certification as a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and Red Hat Certified Examiner (RHCX). At home, Chris enjoys spending time with his wife, Sheree, and his boys, Caleb and Seth. His hobbies include soccer, singing, and exercising with Sheree.
Eric Foster-Johnson is a veteran programmer who works daily with Linux, Mac OS X, Unix, Windows and other operating systems. By day, he writes enterprise Grails and Java software for ObjectPartners, a Minnesota consulting firm. He has authored and co-authored a number of Linux and Unix titles, including the Fedora Bible 2010 Edition, Red Hat RPM Guide, Teach Yourself Linux, Teach Yourself Unix, and Perl Modules.

(was) stumped and (not so) dissapointed (anymore)

UPDATE: I PREVIOUSLY RATED THIS BOOK 2 BUT UPDATED IT TO 3. THE BOOK HAS A LOT OF INFO, THE ADVANCED STUFF LACKS DETAIL BUT STILL IS PROVING USEFUL. NO ONE BOOK IS GOING TO GIVE ME EVERYTHING I NEED TO LEARN THIS STUFF. I FOUND SOLUTIONS ELSEWHERE TO MY PROBLEMS I DESCRIBE BELOW AND I GOT MY NETWORK RUNNING.
I ALSO GOT A SAMBA SERVER WORKING, BUT SEVERAL TYPOS AND MISLEADING/CONFUSING EXAMPLES AND EXPLANATIONS CAUSED MORE WORK THAN WAS NECESSARY. FOR EXAMPLE ON P. 652 THE BOOK GIVES:
# mount -t cifs -o credentials=/etc/samba/creds.smbpub //toys/chris
THAT IS WRONG, IT NEEDS TO BE:
# mount -t cifs -o credentials=/etc/samba/creds.smbpub //toys/chris /mnt/toys
ON P. 651, IT IS ASSUMED THE EXAMPLES ARE BASED ON A CONFIGURATION USING ENCRYPTED PASSWORDS BUT THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE ONLY WORKS FOR PLAIN-TEXT PASSWORDS, AND THE BOOK FAILS TO MENTION THAT:
smb://chris:a72mg@toys/chris
I FIND AS I WORK THROUGH THE BOOK THAT THE SECTION ON IPTABLES IS INSUFFICIENT FOR ME AND THE BOOK RELIES HEAVILY IN THE LATER CHAPTERS ON IPTABLES.
HERE IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I am new to linux and to working with networks. I worked through most of the chapters up to 15 where I am now stuck trying to setup a linux box as a router for my LAN. Most of the book up to this point shows how to use the GUI which is OK, but way more content then I need - I found chapters 2 (linux install) and 4 (linux commands) and the linux installation discs to be most helpful. But with my limited linux and network experience I am finding the book to be incomplete as the book progresses. Chapter 15 is what prompted me to write this review, in-particular the information for configuring network clients is incomplete - less than a page and a half, whereas four chapters (part II, ch 5 - 8) (150+ pages) are devoted to using applications (office, music, video, web-browser.) Here is an example where there just is not enough detail to help me and examples I find online are too confusing:
"In our case, we will put the addresses of the few hosts we know about on our private network in the /etc/hosts file. Then, the system knows to resolve addresses using a DNS server (bind) based on addresses of name servers added to the /etc/resolv.conf file.
The /etc/nsswitch.conf file provides similar functionality for hostnames as well as other info. Be sure to verify that both /etc/host.conf and nsswitch.conf have the correct settings for your environment."
How? What am I supposed to look for? How about some examples? Again, research online just confuses me. The authors go on:
"Similar to /etc/host.conf, hostname resolution first checks /etc/hosts (files) and then /etc/resolv.conf (dns). The relevant line for hostname resolution in /etc/nsswitch.conf is as follows:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal dns
Next, each client machine must know how to get to the Internet. If you have more than one or two computers on your local network, you could configure your router as a DHCP server. See Chapter 22 for info on setting up a DHCP server."
I found no mention of DHCP servers in chapter 22, the whole chapter is devoted to setting up relational databases. Ah, I just found that chapter 21 covers DHCP servers - chapter 22 is a typo, I did not realize that until now. Still, I am not interested in setting up a DHCP server at this time, I only have 3 computers on my LAN, I just want to get the LAN to reach the outside world and the little bit of additional info the authors give that I did not quote here is - I am speechless, it is so lacking.
To devote so much of the book to trival matters such as how to use a web-browser then have so little for the advanced topics makes this book a huge disappointment. I am very discouraged because I don't know what to try next. I will go online and try to get some help. From examples I've seen online my guess is that I will scrap what I've tried to do out of this book and it makes me very unmotivated to try any of the other advanced topics that I just started to get into. I didn't buy this book to learn how to use a web-browser, I bought it for the advanced network topics.
I've run into other problems the authors don't mention, such as the need to stop Network Manager in Fedora 14 before restarting the network. This is the latest problem I found (last night about midnight before I gave up and went to bed.) I was getting these errors and it was necessary to go online to determine why.
Note also that there is no mention in the book of a way to contact the authors and no support online that I could find. I appreciate the online support I've had from other authors of technical books, I am thinking about the Llama from O'Reilly for example.
This will be useful book for those wanting to learn how to install and use linux applications. If you are new to networks and linux and want to implement the advanced topics, the book is lacking in detail and has some confusing explanations and typos that make it difficult to accomplish what the book describes. Still not a bad book, could be better but it covers so much and things change so fast: I can see how things could be missed.
