paranormal fun!

Finally, a new author for my watch and buy list, who puts together a story (a whole story, not just bits and pieces or not fleshed out ideas). In this book you meet Sunny (a psychic, not psycho, gotta love how she distinguished there), and you join her on her adventure to save her bestie and find love (unexpectedly). The heroine is kick butt, though not I'm a classic fighting way, more so the she gets her butt kicked but bounces back each time to keep on going, until she gets the bad guy and her hea. This book is a full stand alone, but so many characters in the town were introduced, including a hot shaman and Sunny's BYF, who could definitely star in future books (please!). If your loving for a book that keeps you turning the pages anticipating where it is go on next, this is a great one for you, with a entertaining cast of characters, psychic visions and paranormal elements, and some hot/sexy times with true love emerging, this covered all my basis. I was provided with an ARC, but would have bought this one anyways!

First, this cover does not do this book justice! I expected a light, little, cutesy story. Oh no!! This is up there as one of the better paranormal mysteries I have read, & believe me I've read a lot! It had twists & turns, & mystery, & some really hot passionate scenes! But above all, it touched my heart. It made me laugh & it made me cry my eyes out. I am so glad this book was recommended to me. If you like hot paranormal romance/mysteries make sure you read this one!! Now I am eagerly awaiting book #2!

Being Forced to Take the Bait

I'll let you in on a perfect get-rich scheme. Enter the college textbook market.
Mr. Pyrczak is certainly not responsible for the completely ridiculous nature of that market, but his book is a perfect example of the problem. College textbook publishers have perfected the art of manufacturing flimsy, inconsequential, and ultimately un-educational books, selling them at horrifically inflated prices, and encouraging professors to require students to buy them. This particular book is somehow required at my graduate program with extremely little merit. This appallingly weak volume doesn't nearly justify its twenty-plus dollar price tag and can be considered far beneath the abilities of the advanced students who are required to use it. Look no further than the introduction for proof. Pyrczak first admits that the book is not meant to be a style manual or a discussion of the mechanics of word usage. That explains how skinny the book is, but it certainly doesn't explain the price. Then there is the admission that the entire book is based on generalizations which may or may not be useful for particular academic situations. The next admission is that experienced writers will often feel free to violate any of the guidelines covered herein. See pages v-vi for all of the above in plain view, and then wonder why the book even exists.
Speaking of experienced writers, I and others like me didn't get to the academic levels at which this book is required without having known these "guidelines" for years and years. Thus, this volume is far beneath its intended audience - that is, those who are required to purchase it. For example, I am not impressed by middle school-level pointers like "The importance of a topic should be explicitly stated in the introduction," nor do I need an entire chapter on how to create a title. This book should be sold to teens who are writing for the first time, and for about one-third the price. As for me, I've been reeled in and clubbed over the head, like the type of big dumb fish that the publishers assumed me to be. [~doomsdayer520~]

Dense and wide-ranging essays. Very smart & readable.

James Carey currently teaches at Columbia University as a CBS Professor of International Journalism. In this collection of essays, the theme of communication and democracy is explored from a number of perspectives. The topics include technology and democratic change, the role of communication in the American community, the challenges facing academia, and communications and economics.

The book is divided into five general sections, and each section has an introduction to Carey's ideas written by various contributors. While the introductory chapters were all well-written, the essay by John Pauly introducing the section on Media Scholarship was particularly noteworthy. About Carey, Pauly says:

"He has never been the theorist others want him to be. He is too working-class in his upbringing to join in the choruses of praise for American capitalism; too personally cautious and gradualist to be mistaken for a radical; too American in his intellectual references and too unassuming in his style to be worshipped as a prominent cultural theorist."

That is probably as good a way as any to describe the ideas here to someone not familiar with Carey's work.

I read the book with a great deal of enjoyment. I took copious notes, and found that I added a huge number of cited books to my already long to-read list. I did my graduate work in Media, so it may be more accessible to me for that reason. That said, I would not hesitate to recommend it to the general reader. Although the ideas are dense and occasionally demanding, Carey is a remarkably straightforward and readable writer. It should appeal to anyone concerned with any of the general themes, or with an interest in media history.
