About the Author
Marilyn Stokstad, teacher, art historian, and museum curator, has been a leader in her field for decades and has served as president of the College Art Association and the International Center of Medieval Art. In 2002, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Women’s Caucus for Art. In 1997, she was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award as Kansas Art Educator of the Year and an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters by Carleton College. She is Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She has also served in various leadership capacities at the University’s Spencer Museum of Art and is Consultative Curator of Medieval Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri

Michael W. Cothren is Professor of Art History at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Art Department Chair, Coordinator of Medieval Studies, and Divisional Chair of the Humanities. Since arriving at Swarthmore in 1978, he has taught specialized courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on theory and method, but he most enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners. His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in a book on the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral entitled Picturing the Celestial City. Michael is consultative curator of medieval stained glass at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. He has served on the board of the International Center of Medieval Art and as President both of the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and of his local school board. When not teaching or engaged in art historical research, you can find him hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, Arizona.

Scholarly Look at the Rise of France

This book, written by the notable historian Jean Dunbain (of St. Anne's College at Oxford), is a truly scholarly look at the emergence of "France" from the ninth through the twelfth centuries. The book is written for an academic and/or scholarly audience, and is built off a rich source list of primary and secondary documents. The work begins at The Treaty of Verdun and immediately begins the necessary examination of Carolingian rulers and then moves through to principalities and formative trends of each of the periods up through the twelfth century. The account is highly detailed with a deep and varied text that seems to leave little uncovered throughout the the Ile-de-France region as "France" eventually expands its rule outward over time. There are a few basic maps and genealogical charts, but illustrations are not a major factor in the text.

The book is excellent for anyone interested in the topic and willing to do the requisite careful reading, but would also serve well in any undergraduate or graduate university history curriculum. It is a wonderful and insightful examination of how France originated that employs only the best scholarship in documenting the story. With the sheer number of individuals and places that are examined, it will remain as a reference of note long after the first read of the book. Five stars.

Gamble paid off!

Everyone at my medical school endorses BRS and HY so I wasn't too sure about this series, but I took a gamble (same price as HY with content & ??'s like BRS). I'm glad I did!

The book does an excellant job of condensing the relevent information in digestable portions with outstanding diagrams. I read this book over summer before 2nd year, about 5 months after completing my Biochem coursework. I did well in classes but had HMG CoA totally mixed up between ketones and cholesterol (as just one example) but this book put the big picture, comparative information and necessary details together for me.

It's a great confidence builder and even though Biochem isn't considered the highest yield topic for Step 1, I would invest in this book.

CD needs to be improved!!!!

Book itself is excellent! Very easy to digest all information. I tried to use CD to answer questions. Programm doesn't let to check all incorrect answers, instead it shows some of them or totally different answers from what i did answer. I verified it. Some of the questions repeat in the next test and keeps coming up again and again. My conclusion: CD is totally usless, but book is excellent for studying and i am still happy.
