About the Author
Timothy Chhim is a motivational speaker and owner of an Allstate Insurance Agency in Nanuet, New York, USA. He was born in a rural village in Cambodia and from a young age dreamed of freedom and a better life. When the communist Khmer Rouge, under the leadership of Pol Pot, seized power in 1975, Timothy was among thousands who were forced to leave the capital city of Phnom Penh. He was singled out as an educated citizen as well as a Republic official, having served as a police officer, and was sent to the jungle to be killed. He managed to escape, after many failed attempts, and survived to reach the safety of Thailand and later the USA. Tom Cunningham is a motivational speaker, radio host, and life coach. He was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of five, a disease that affects every joint in his body, causing constant pain and making many day-to-day activities challenging. He has been in the hospital over 40 times for numerous surgeries. In addition, high doses of the steroid prednisone stunted his growth, and he stands 5’1” tall. Despite the pain and challenges that come from living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Tom chooses a positive mental attitude, and answers “Amazing!” to anyone who asks how he is. Tom and his wife, Kim, live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Taylor Tagg is a published author, professional speaker, and radio show host. He has written three personal growth books, Enrich Your Sunrise, The Path to a Peaceful Heart, and co-wrote Adversity to Advantage. Taylor's podcast, Journey to Success, showcases people who are passionate about making a difference in the world with transformational businesses and ideas. The Energy of the Mind is the Essence of Life...

This book describes the stories of three men who demonstrated how the power of a positive attitude and perseverance helped them overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. As the daughter and teacher of Killing Fields survivors,Timothy and Kim Chhim, I have been greatly influenced by their optimism to see the best in every situation and to use that positive energy to affect those around me. Using Tim's story as well as speaking about Tom's and Taylor's experiences, they have made a huge impact on my students' lives. Their stories has inspired them and they are starting to see how they can handle challenging situations in their lives in other ways. This is a must read book! Also, if you are able, you must try to have these men come and speak at your schools or any motivational events; they are incredible men with incredible experiences to share!

Delightful Surprise.

This is a sneaky little book. Full of surprises. Was seeking my usual dose of "entertaining hardship" stories, you know the type, a tale of courage, endurance, and achievement, so impressive that the degree of my own personal challenges pale in comparison. You see, drawing off the strength of others' helps me get through my day with a little less angst and self pity. That's why tales of super-human achievements are a mainstay on my night stand.

But this crafty little book offered an unexpected twist. It engaged me on a different and deeper level than usual. The story tellers some how lured me off my mental sofa and into exercise mode. Trust me, I'm too lazy, or too old, or too wise, for mental exercise. However, these authors (with the aid of an excellent editor I'm sure) enabled me to shake off the cob webs in some rarely visited corners of the mind.

Not to scare you off, but this book triggered some over due introspection. The good news is that its dose of medicine is more powerful and longer lasting than the typical book of its kind.

A delightful page-turner filled with fortitude, good will, and actionable guidance. Many thanks and good wishes to the authors. Kudos to the editor.

He is the author or editor of more than 40 technical books, including The DTV Handbook, The Standard Handbook of Video and Television Engineering, The Standard Handbook of Audio and Radio Engineering, and Communications Receivers. Mr. Whitaker is a Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers.

Eye candy for engineers.

Wow, this handbook came as a pleasant surprise. This 2016 first edition of the SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook is pretty impressive; it fulfills its claimed purpose of a "hands on guide" for broadcast station design and maintenance. The contributing authors read like a Who's Who in the broadcast engineering field, and the editor-in-chief is Jerry Whitaker, VP of Standards Development for the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), former SBE President, SBE Fellow, and author of more than thirty books on technical topics.

The SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook contains cutting edge information on virtually every aspect of broadcast station design and operations, both radio and TV, including the now proposed ATSC 3.0. My favorite chapter was Chapter 5.11 on electronic news gathering (ENG) systems using cellular frequencies (aka bonded ENG), as opposed to Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) frequencies. I forgive the author of that chapter for his dig about "dated" point-to-point microwave technology, because for truly major news events (e.g., Katrina, or out here in California, earthquakes), you had better not be relying on the continued availability of terrestrial commercial mobile radio service (CMRS) phones; only Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) handsets and BAS gear at hardened broadcast sites are likely to still be working during such scenarios.

But I digress. Like the NAB Engineering Handbook, all of the figures are black & white. However, the most recent edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook is the tenth edition dating from 2007, whereas the SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook has the advantage of addressing advances in broadcast engineering in the succeeding nine years. So, while NAB is working on an updated 11th edition of its engineering handbook, that update is still a year away.

Other contrasts are the size and weight: The NAB Engineering Handbook is 8 1/2 x 11 inches, over 2,000 pages, and weighs more than ten pounds; the SBE Broadcast Engineering handbook is a more compact 7 x 9 inches, 912 pages, and weighs 3.5 pounds. So the SBE handbook is a lot easier to pull out for reference than the big daddy NAB handbook.

I expect that the 2016 SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook will turn out to compliment rather than compete with the in-the-works 11th edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook, and so can recommend adding the SBE Broadcast Engineering handbook to your technical library now, especially if you're in the engineering side of broadcasting.

The developmental theorists (Plaget, Burner, et al) are essentially correct in their understanding of how minds mature as children grow. 2. Second, the students are taught a sequence of necessary skills: understanding a problem, learning general strategies and selecting an appropriate strategy. Within these groups the students learn the basics of solving problems, beginning with the idea that problem solving is not such a difficult skill after all. A wide variety of activities are used beginning with open questions and gradually moving toward questions which have a definite solution. Many of these activities are in the form of games to increase student interaction and hypothesis testing within the group."

Great for all Students!

I teach gifted students, and after borrowing this book from my school's teacher resource library for two years, I've finally decided to get my own copy. It's got great math word problems, and my students eat them up! I like that each problem is interesting, with different characters and scenarios (there's a series of humorous problems about an alien colony, for instance). There are also different focuses and levels of difficulty. The book is organized around several approaches students can use for problem-solving -- ideal for math teachers, too.

Don't let the publishers date deter you ... I have used the problems in this book in my middle school math classroom for 20 years and it is still the best collection of problems out there. Absolutely in with 21st century skills of collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity. I don't know what I'd do without it.

The Hebrew word Adam/Human is rooted in the word Dimyon/Imagination. We are created in the Divine imagination, as it were, and we create our fluid reality through our imagination.

We are not Homo Sapiens. More accurately we are Homo Imaginus.

What makes us human, what distinguishes us as an Adam/Human, is our ability to reimagine our lives, and life in general, differently than the way it appears in the moment.

The opposite of healthy imagination is "idolatry", which occurs when we become stuck on one image. When this happens we mistake a part for the whole and we end up worshiping a frozen and graven image, a single snapshot of reality.

The saddest thing in the world is when we lose touch with our Dimyon/Imagination.

We become stuck in our lives when we do not have the ability or courage to reimagine our circumstances to be different than they are now.

We cling desperately to our status quo, as miserable or as unsatisfying as it may be, because our imagination is in exile. We cannot even imagine an alternative reality for ourselves.

Don't buy this book unless you want to dramatically change your life

Rav DovBer PInson brings his encyclopedic knowledge of Torah and the Zohar to bear in this seminal and extremely accessible book. He helps elevate Jewish prayer from the static to dynamic, from the abstract to the experiential. Expect to be enlightened as the prophetic experience is explored, as well as how to tune our own thoughts and visualizations. The power of thoughts and intention are explored as the vehicle for manifesting a new reality. Rav Pinson gives concrete examples, and exercises for elevating our frame-of-mind and perspective. I can't speak highly enough about how Rav Pinson has culled from a plethora of sources and added a new dimension to our collective understanding of the interconnectedness of reality. If you are giving this as a gift or reading it for yourself, I highly recommend just getting both volumes. While independent of one another, the lessons explored around quieting one's mind in volume 1 are of great service for anyone who wants to understand Jewish meditation with a Kabbalistic perspective. I'm hopeful that this material will be available via audio soon!

About the Author

Mykola Borzenkov received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv, Ukraine. The Ph.D. thesis “Synthesis and properties of surface active monomers based on derivatives of based on derivatives of hydroxy and amino carboxylic acids” were carried out under supervision of prof. Orest Hevus. At present time M. Borzenkov is a research assistant at Department of Physics at University of  Milan-Bicocca (Milan, Italy). His main research fields are synthesis and application of functional surface active monomers, synthesis, functionalization and biomedical application of gold nanoparticles.

Orest Hevus is a professor of Organic Chemistry. From 1979 to the present he has been working at Lviv Polytechnic National University. His research field is synthesis of functional surface active peroxides and monomers.
