From beginning to end, this book was a great and easy read! The Solution Oriented Mind is a culmination of stories and anologies that can help anyone tap into your true potential. It highligts the power of the mind to achieve goals and dreams. Chapter one, "Flying above Life's Challenges," is by far my favorite chapter. The eagle analogy, which was drawn from a scripture-based reference, was a creative and common-sense approach to dealing with our daily challenges and issues. All in all, a great read! Many of the memorable quotes and stories such as "A one-hundred degree attitude" or the story of a swimmer wanting to figure out what it took to win an Olympic gold medal, will stay with me on my journey to success.

Though the book is written for non-chemists, it's also useful for people in the field, who perhaps know the chemistry, but not the applications (if you walk into any chemist's office, look at his or her bookshelves, and can find a general interest book, chances are it's this one). Maybe the only thing bad I can say about the 2nd edition is that, unlike the 1st edition, it doesn't include the molecular line structures that organic chemists normally use, opting instead for the more colorful, but less useful, RasMol depictions.

Explores the molecule nature of life

This is a popular book on organic chemistry, a celebrated one at that, this being the second edition, substantially revised. The first was published in 1987. It is one of those almost legendary books of the publishing history, a technical book on a highly technical subject that somehow managed to reach something close to a large readership.
Ironically, the reason is not so much in the drawings of the molecules, but in the text. Peter Atkins covers a wide range of interesting molecules and shows how they are related, and he makes their properties semi-accessible to the general reader. I say, "semi" because, frankly for this chemistry-challenged person, seeing two-dimensional shapes of the molecules helps me to understand them only slightly. I suspect for those more conversant with chemistry, the drawings (new for this edition) will be valuable. To me, the mystery of why a certain shape and elemental composition should result in a nutritious substance whereas something else with only the slightest change should be poisonous is not dispelled.
He begins with "Simple substances," oxygen molecules, nitrogen, our air and its pollutants. He ends with the very complex DNA and RNA. Along the way he enlightens us about so many of the chemicals and foods and consumer products we use in our daily lives from soaps and gasoline to fats and oils, to painkillers and street drugs. His style is very readable and he has the welcome knack of being informative about interesting things. Here are some examples:
Baking power releases carbon dioxide to leaven baked goods in two separate bursts. "The first burst occurs at room temperature as a result of the action of the moistened tartaric acid...The second...is due to the action of the aluminum salt, and it occurs at high temperature." (p. 24)
One of the differences between synthetic and natural vanilla (vanillin) is that the natural is "weakly radioactive," the former having been made from coal tar, "from which the radioactivity has long decayed," while the latter picks up some radioactive carbon-14 atoms captured from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. (p. 154) (Of course natural vanilla is also more expensive.)
Lemons originally came from northern India and were introduced into the Mediterranean region about a thousand years ago. (p. 155)
"Initially, a young white wine may have a greenish hue from the chlorophyll...molecules that survive fermentation." (p. 176)
Window glass allows UV-A rays to pass through but blocks UV-B rays. (p. 180) I had always wondered about this because I had gotten conflicting information from different sources.
There's a Glossary and many full color illustrations and photos on glossy paper in addition to the color-coded drawings of the molecules, some of which are very beautiful. There's an Introduction in which Atkins explains the difference between elements and molecules, between atoms and compounds, and differentiates between the bonds between atoms and the forces that hold molecules together.

A great book about Chemistry in our world

I already had the 1st release of this book. In the 2nd release, Atkins expanded the Chemistry in our world. The book is very understandable even if you do not have a chemical background (however if you know something about chemistry, you will get more from the book). Higly reccomended!

sticking patterns

Great book. The material in the book is presented in a very straight forward manner and the cd included really helps "visualize" how the exercises are supposed to sound. This is not a beginners book. But once you get to the level where you can read the rhythms the material is highly valuable and versatile. It will change the way you think and hear the instrument. I think its particularly useful for jazz. But anybody can benefit from it.

His stickings of singles/double combinations lead to traditional and innovative accents and super-imposed rhythmic patterns, which translate directly to his rhythm/meter, time-functioning, technique, and linear concepts. Miranda Albright has a secret. Actually, more than one secret - but it all started when she first spied her decadent neighbor making love to a woman on the grounds of his estate. Although innocent, the young Miranda was captivated by the sight, and found herself drawn irresistibly back to the spot summer after summer when the handsome Earl was in residence at his country estate to spy on him and his various lovers.

Now Miranda's family is in dire straits financially and the only way she can save them is to offer her innocence to the Earl himself, Ethan Hamon. But Ethan wants more than her innocence. He wants her available to him for his debauchery for three entire months, to play with at his sensual whim. Little does he realize that before it is over, the sweet Miranda will have snared him heart and soul.

Sometimes a book resonates with you so strongly, but you cannot quite place your finger on what exactly about the story struck you so. For me, Jess Michaels' new book Everything Forbidden is just such a novel. Yes, the characters are compelling, the romantic dynamic is absolutely heart-wrenching at times, and the plot is entertaining.

But there is more to this story than just those elements. The way Michaels puts it all together makes you feel every moment as if you are in the book yourself. She builds empathy for all of her characters with seeming ease, and the book becomes more than just a story, at least while you are reading it.

It might be said that there are only so many tales to be told in the world, and while this may be true, the difference in a good story and a great story is the authors ability to make me forget I have ever before seen a similar plot. Jess Michaels has done just that with this book.

Ethan is a captivating leading man cast as a hero tormented with convictions that he can never have what his heart desires most. Breaking through his walls proves difficult, but not impossible for a heroine with the tenderness and spunk of the beautiful Miranda.

For anyone who loves historical romances, this touching book is a must-read! Do yourself a favor and buy your copy of Everything Forbidden now. You won't be sorry!

Miranda Albright is unable to forget the day she caught her family's neighbor, Ethan Hamon, the Earl of Rothschild, seducing his current lover. That image has stayed with her for three years providing Miranda with the courage to deliberately seek out the earl just to spy on him with his lovers.

Miranda's idyllic spying must come to an end however, when her family falls on hard times with the death of her father. Not only are they penniless, but Miranda has younger sisters that need a Season in order to find a husband. Unable to finance their seasons, Miranda has no choice but to make a decision that changes her life. She goes to her virile next door neighbor and offers the only thing of value she has in return for helping her sisters--her virginity and three months of any sexual pleasure of his choice.

Vowing not to let her heart get involved, Miranda enters into the relationship with Ethan having no concept of the sinful and sensuous times ahead. Slowly falling under his spell, Miranda knows that her time with Ethan is limited. When he asks the one thing of her she can't give, her sorrow knows no bounds. Denying herself the only man she will ever love, Miranda vows to continue on--if only she can convince her heart.

I can not stop thinking about EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN and the way the characters related to each other. I have always been intrigued by the English societal hierarchy and the laws relating to females. Women such as Miranda actually didn't have a choice, heaven forbid, after their fathers and husbands were no longer around to provide for them. While some might fault Miranda for her proposition to Ethan, I found her choice to be a no-brainer. She had watched this man make love and seduce women for years so she knew he would agree. She had guts and when she loved, she loved entirely.

Ethan's character is more complex. The product of a hell raising and promiscuous father who watched his mother drink herself to death, Ethan's heart was hardened against finding a wife and love. That is, until he met a tiny sprite of a woman named Miranda.

EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN by Jess Michaels soothed my historical loving soul. Add in romance mixed with sensuous and forbidden pleasures and Jess Michaels now has a fan for life.

Even though Miranda wishes for the passion she has witnessed from her
hiding place, she fears the bargain she has struck with Ethan.
Although she relishes what Ethan can do to her body, she fears what
Ethan can do to her heart.

I love historical romance. I love erotic romance. I adore the two
combined! Jess Michaels says in her bio that in every romance she
buys, she searches out `the good stuff'. Well, she sure can write
`the good stuff'! Everything Forbidden is a scorching hot romance.
Oh, to be debauched by Ethan Hamon! Eye-crossingly erotic with a
