About the Author
Ryunosuke Akutagawa was the author of more than 100 short stories as well as translations of the works of Anatole France and Yeats. Akutagawa was regarded as a major author during his lifetime, and the Akutagawa Prize, established after his death, is now one of Japan’s most prestigious literary awards. Two of the stories from his collection Rashomon formed the basis of the award-winning film of the same title by Akira Kurosawa.

The distorted mirror of Kappaland

"Kappa" is told from the point of view of Patient 23, an asylum inmate who tells of his incredible journey into the heart of Kappaland, peopled by the Kappa, the magical creatures of Japanese folklore.
In the tradition of "Gulliver's Travels," inside Kappaland, Akutagawa, author of "Rashomon" and "In the Grove," has created a twisted reflection of both his contemporary Japanese society and his own self-loathing. It has been a difficult tale to interpret in Japan, being hailed as either a children's story, a social satire or simply weird. Akutagawa himself feared insanity due to his mother's mental deterioration during his youth, and his own justified fear of the taint of madness in his blood.
Akutagawa's mental state when writing "Kappa" is important background, and the paperback edition comes with an extensive mini-biography of the famous author that is almost the size of the story itself. Akutagawa never wrote novels, and it is strange to see a single story packaged in one book. The introduction/biography is well written as well, and helps to reveal the story.
The writing in "Kappa" is sharp and quick-witted. The satire is equal parts clever and odd. Religion, marriage, arts and entertainment, all are in part skewered and skewed. The book is an incredibly fast read, and one that you will want to pass to your friends to read as well, so that you can see what someone else makes of it.

Exponentially irreverent

One of Akutagawa's most famous novellas. Although not really comparable to his more serious work ("In the Grove", "Rashomon", "Hell Screen" &c.) it springs out of necessity for a brilliant man to view its world through the prism of satire. Even though it's basically a satire of Japanese society from the first half of 20th century, most of its themes, admonitions and ridicules are still quite valid today.
What still amazes me about this book (and other Akutagawa's works as well) is how the writer manages to develop characters (and in this case an entire imaginary culture) to such fullness, given the rather (spatially) limited medium of a novella.
Highly recommended reading.

a book with a difference

"Kappa" is one of the best books of Akutagawa - one of the least appreciated authors of pre-war Japan. Kappa can be compared to only one book that I remember of and that is Karel Capek's award winning "War with the Newts". Kappa was ages ahead of its time especially considering the society in which Akutagawa was living in.
This is a story about interactions of a human being, whose sanity is in question, and the Kappas, some mythical creatures. This is a satire in the essence that Akutagawa draws critical picture of Japanese intellectual society and their egos and vanity. The Kappa society is an equitable representation of the human society with the same set of problems but different set of solutions. This is one of those books which is a must for a good collection.

Incredible Resource for the PCP and student

During school, I made many cheat sheets. If I'd had this book, I would have been able to cut my work in half.
3 years after starting to practice, I find that I refer to this book almost weekly as it's small and fits in my medical bag. It addresses common conditions and considerations that the PCP comes across all the time with regards to medication choices, evaluation approaches and even brief discussions about the pathophys.
I tell all students that rotate with me to purchase this book if they are thinking about primary care.

A perfect companion for a med student or a resident in a primary care setting

I used this book during my Family medicine rotation (probably could have used it during any type of primary care outpatient setting) and was extremely impressed with its clarity and practicality. It briefly reminds the reader of definition, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods, differential diagnosis and treatment (along with dosing of medications). In a clinic setting as a medical student trying to present findings to an attending physician a succinct source that gets to the point but is thorough enough to remind the student of essentially everything one needs to know about a certain disease. This book is good for quickly refreshing your memory about a disease, or looking up what diagnostic tests you should order or what drugs/dose you should prescribe before presenting the case to the attending and look like a star. One caveat is that the student needs to have already come to a diagnosis after examining the patient in order to use this book since this book is organized by disease names rather than signs and symptoms. If patient presentation isn't clear enough for a student to make a diagnosis (which often is the case) you can certainly look up the chapter on what you think is the most likely diagnosis and present the patient to the attending what you'd do if the diagnosis was X. I'd think that as a resident of IM or Family med working in a clinic this is an invaluable tool. This book was one of the best purchases I made during my 3rd year in medical school.

Strong content, weak binding

This is a true pocket guide with lots of great and useful information. I like that the authors give precise information on treatment. Unfortunately, the only drawback that I have found so far is that the binding is very weak and easy to break by just opening the book fully. It will not hold up very long without treating it with TLC.

About the Author
Martyn Cobourne is Professor of Orthodontics at King’s College London and Hon Consultant in Orthodontics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated as a dental surgeon from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990. After a series of junior hospital appointments in maxillofacial surgery and pediatric dentistry, he obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994. A three-year period of specialty training in orthodontics at the King’s Dental Institute led to the award of Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and entry onto the Specialist List in Orthodontics in 1997. He was then awarded a Clinical Training Fellowship from the Medical Research Council in 1998, which allowed a dedicated period of research to take place in Paul Sharpe’s laboratory at the United Medical and Dental Schools, Guy’s Dental Hospital, working in the field of craniofacial developmental biology. This work culminated in a PhD from the University of London in 2002. A further period of higher clinical training at Guy’s Hospital led to an Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship in Orthodontics and accreditation as a Consultant Orthodontist in 2004. Martyn was appointed as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics at the King’s College London in 2004 and awarded a personal chair in orthodontics in 2011.

Martyn is Orthodontic Training Programme Director at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and is an MSc examiner at King’s College London. He is Director of Research at the British Orthodontic Society and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orthodontics. He is registered on the Specialist Orthodontic List of the General Dental Council.

Andrew DiBiase is a consultant orthodontist based at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust in Ashford and works in part-time NHS and private practice in Kent. He graduated as a dental surgeon from King’s College London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990. After a series of junior hospital appointments in maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, paediatric dentistry and periodontology he obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994. A three-year period of specialty training in orthodontics at the Royal London Hospital led to a Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and entry onto the Specialist List in Orthodontics in 1997. He carried out his higher orthodontic training in Sheffield and Leicester and was awarded the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship in Orthodontics in 2000, being appointed Consultant Orthodontist at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital shortly after.

Andrew is involved in the postgraduate training programmes and is an MSc examiner at the Royal London and Guy’s Dental Schools. He is active in the British Orthodontic Society and he is registered on the Specialist Orthodontic List of the General Dental Council. He is a provisional member of the Angle Society of Europe.

great book and great series

An earlier review talks about how well this book works for school-age students. I teach ESL to adults, and my students love this book. Some of them have copied the stories out of the book, even though I never give them an assignment to do that. The progression from Very Easy True Stories to this book (Easy True Stories) to True Stories is really well done. The English is closely attached to drawings in the easiest book, but as the series gets more advanced the drawings - the "training wheels" - gradually lose their importance.

Wonderful Resource

This is one more of a remarkably effective and well-thought out series. I have almost every level so far and each book has added enormously to my English classes. Even so, I was hesitant to get this level because I didn't see how the layout was going work. I needn't have worried.

The previous level book (Very Easy True Stories) is set up so that there are illustrations with captions. This level has the the same clear illustrations, but the story is written in paragraph form on the the facing page. What I do is use the book as a speaking tool. I have my students read the story and then tell it to one of their classmates, or to me, pointing to the illustrations to help them continue. Having the story on the opposite page means that I can cover up the words and so they have to search their minds for the appropriate vocabulary instead of continually looking for the word on the page.

I have used this method with students from every leel and because the stories are so captivating, it works very well for all. The students are barely conscious that they are learning new vocabulary; they are excited to be speaking and telling an interesting story.

Each story is followed by exercises which reenforce the vocabulary and act as indicators as to whether the student has understood both the specifics and the general idea of the text.

I hope that the author comes out with a second part of this level as she's done with the first level.

Easy True Stories

In an effort to teach my neighbors English, I went to the library and reviewed many of the TESL books in my local branch. I borrowed several and found this one to be the best for starting reading. The stories are extracted from newspaper articles that are gossipy and that have vocabulary words related to current life. For example, there are stories about true love, tatoos, how to find a spouse, etc.

The articles are charming and they are good humoured. My neighbors got a good laugh out of the first story about a couple with mattress problems. This was a great beginning for their work with me. The other stories have helped the students open up and talk about their lives in English.

I do think the exercises after the stories could be more relevant and more conducive to drilling. I can't move through the book very quickly because it doesn't pick out grammar and idioms for my students to study. However, it has some very good conversation topics in the teacher section. It also has some writing exercises.

In the past, I have taught foreign languages to high school students but never English as a Second Language to adults. This is a new experience for me. I do think that this is the best material I have found so far to keep the students engaged and get them thinking about the words they need in daily life.

It will take a long time to finish all the articles and then I will be able to update this review.
