About the Author
Douglas C. Giancoli obtained his BA in physics (summa cum laude) from UC Berkeley, his MS in physics at MIT, and his PhD in elementary particle physics back at the UC Berkeley. He spent 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley’s Virus lab developing skills in molecular biology and biophysics. His mentors include Nobel winners Emilio Segrè and Donald Glaser.

He has taught a wide range of undergraduate courses, traditional as well as innovative ones, and continues to update his textbooks meticulously, seeking ways to better provide an understanding of physics for students.

Doug’s favorite spare-time activity is the outdoors, especially climbing peaks. He says climbing peaks is like learning physics: it takes effort and the rewards are great.

Please don't advertise that this book comes with Mastering Physics and the e-text if it doesn't! Even for renting, it should have clarified so I didn't waste my money on this. Offer it as a separate item if you cannot provide the entire item as advertised.

Legitimacy, and the intricacies of politics and diplomacy...

This book lives up to and exceeds all expectations. Kissinger shows us in great detail what his Balance of Power Doctrine is based upon by showing the great diplomat Metternich in all his glory, when the Concert of Europe truly began and the world was restored. Whether you are dealing with Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, or a tyrannical boss at work, this work contains insights which transcend the period of study. Kissenger basically discusses the problems and politics of building a coalition, proving a tyrant to be a tyrant, and finally how to construct a political enduring peace.

I recommend the book whole-heartedly. His writing is insightful, full of preternatural wisdom and of enduring value. I especially liked how he dissected the personalities of the actors in this play, Napoleon, Metternich, Castlereagh, and Talleyrand, and the manner in which he highlights that those personalities influenced the course of history. You will come away with a deep understanding of politics at all levels and also why Kissinger dominated the diplomacy of his period.

The Past Keeps Repeating Itself

Excellent book that is hard to find and one that should never go out of print. This book first came out in the early 1960's and sadly was not reprinted until the early part of the 21st century and it is now out of print once again. The world of Metternich and Castlereagh was one of finding peace, keeping your country strong while keeping the young aristocrats and military professionals from starting wars. Bismark ran into much the same problems when he was Chancellor of Prussia. The key to Metternich, Castlereagh and Bismark was diplomacy based on strength and cunning. When those that came after them saw diplomacy as weakness and opted for war, then eventually their empires came to an end. We saw the same problems in the Bush 43 administration; hence two wars that contiune to drain the economy and deplete the nation of young men and women who go off to war and die or are injured, not to mention the strained relations around the world. The outcome is a weakening of the nation state and eventual ruin. The empires of Britian, Austria and Prussia all ceased to exist when they threw diplomacy to the wind. Can the US escape the same circumstances by rebuilding diplomacy while maintining our military strength but not using it to go to war? Much like Sun Tzu's 'Art of War,' Kissinger's 'The World Restored' should be read by politicans, military professionals, business folks and the general populace at large. Democracy is based on conversation and no better way to have a conversation about history and diplomacy then by reading and discussing 'The World Restored.' Kissingers later book on Diplomacy pales in comparison to what is discussed in 'The World Restored.'

This is a classic, of course. Elegantly written, insightful, philosophically sophisticated, with a lot of insight for those who want to understand international relations. Castlereagh simply wanted to maintain a balance of power in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars in order to facilitate Britain's security. Metternich, representing an Austria that was in the center of Europe and could not simply seek a discrete balance, wanted a conservative social contract at a time when the forces of nationalism were ultimately destined to sunder the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They wanted the same thing for different reasons. Castlereagh, dealing with resistance from his own Parliament, wanted a realpolitical solution. Metternich, the ultimate practitioner of "Machtpolitik," understood nonetheless the importance of ideas and ideology. I bought and read the paperback edition of A World Restored more than thirty years ago. I bought the hardback so that I could read it again without having to physically hold the book together. A necessary read for those truly interested in international relations.

Excellent textbook to debate modern presidential issues...perhaps challenging for those who know little about presidency

I read this textbook for my POLS 413: U.S. Presidency class along with another textbook called "The American Presidency" 5th edition by Milkis and Nelson. "Understanding the Presidency" 6th edition does a good job complementing "The American Presidency." While "The American Presidency" presents an outline for the major changes in the presidency during a chronological approach, this textbooks ("Understanding the Presidency") contains essays in which political scientists debate many issues pertinent to the modern presidency.

The following are some examples of the issues discussed:

the nominating process
the presidential mandate (contains Dahl's article "The Myth of the Presidential Mandate")
the permanent campaign
the president's ability to manage the government
the unitary executive theory
the president's relationship with Congress
prerogative powers to fight War of Terror

In most sections, Pfiffner seems to try to give both sides of the story. For example, when judging George W. Bush' legacy as president, Pfiffner includes an anti-Bush essay by Sean Wilentz entitled "The Worst President in History?" and a pro-Bush essay by Karl Rove entitled "The Long View."

OVERALL OPINION:

I think the textbook is a bit difficult for introductory students who do not know much about the presidency (ex: students who have not memorized the list of presidents and who do not know some of the major events that occurred during each presidency). However, if you combine this text with another text such as "The American Presidency," I certainly think introductory students could learn a lot.

Certainly, I recommend the textbook for those who are ready and eager to discuss and debate questions like: "Did George W. Bush abuse his power as president when adapting a view of presidential power called the unitary executive theory? If so, what are some arguments that one might employ to justify his behavior? What are some counter arguments to the arguments that attempt to justify Bush's behavior?"

Pulling Your Own Strings

I read this book 22 years ago, when I was an 18 year old heading off to college. The book provided me with ways to be assertive and achieve my goals without allowing others to walk all over me.
Now, I am the mother of three teenagers and am reading this book again with my 14 year old daughter, in an effort to help her through a difficult time dealing with an authority figure (who is manipulative and abusing her power.)
I am simply amazed at how much of the information in the book has worked its way into my core beliefs over the years...from handling difficult people and situations to teaching my kids how to handle bullies. As we were reading the introduction, my daughter said, "Mom, I don't need to read this." When I asked her why, she commented "you've been teaching it to me all my life!"
Young adults, I highly recommend that each and every one of you read this book. Learn to stand up for yourself and be respected for doing so. Parents, you'll want to read it too!

Pulling Your Own Strings by Dr. Dyer

This work provides specific guidance on how to take control
of one's life ( to the extent that is possible). For instance,
he describes how to operate from a position of strength by
placing people on an equal plane and addressing them by their
first names. In addition, the author criticizes our tendency
to be governed by past events that we can no longer control
or change. He explains the need to draw boundaries and assert
ourselves in defense of our basic rights. The author
recommends the behavioral approach in order to respond to people
and events that make us uncomfortable. Above all, the author
warns about placing institutions over ourselves and personal
self-worth and satisfaction. Finally, the author asks us to
look around ourselves in an effort to make our daily lives
better for everyone. He even quotes the Declaration
of Independence (July 4, 1776):
"All experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to
suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
The book is an excellent behaviorally based reference which
can help us manage our affairs both privately and in the
workplace setting.

Dr Dyer is a rare individual. He really understands. He has found simplicity. The truth is simple, that which I have yet to understand! I read this book first, and felt compelled to learn how to pull my own strings. I freed myself from outside influences by reading this book, Pulling Your Own Strings. We learn to be more than a sailboat, drifting on the sea with a fixed sail, frolicking about, at the mercy of every wave and breeze. I learned how to be effective at grabbing the control panel, that pull the strings of my life, which at times takes a bit of assertion. Combining that with one of his other books, "Your Sacred Self, I gained peace. I finally found the key to dealing with stress. I did so by learning what meditation really is from him. Instead of a lotus position, and humming a mantra, I learned that it is simply sitting or lying still, undisturbed, for ten or fifteen minutes, letting all thoughts leave my mind. Each thought is tied to an emotion. You come to a place that is quiet and peaceful, and your arise refreshed, renewed, and unfettered with stress and resentments. Then your greatest problem solving mind is present, solutions appear. It is true. What a great tool. Instead of resorting to addictive, and destructive habits, or substances to deal with stress, he has shown me the ultimate solution.
So there you have it, with Pulling Your Own Strings, you learn to be the master of your own life, and recognize those, and those things, that try to direct us, and not neccessarily for unselfish reasons. Then freed from outside control, we begin to see that the solutions to our lives are available to us from within. In Your Sacred Self, he teaches us that ego is controlling, and dominating our lives. It is at war with your greater spiritual self. It keeps us from sitting still. Always striving, but never arriving. Let the noise and clamor cease. We are all one together. We don't need ego driven domination, but rather cooperation. Get rid of the anger. Learn how to eliminate the negative influences in your life. The most powerful way for someone else to control you, is to make you angry. Once they see it no longer works, they usually leave you alone, or it makes them angrier that they no longer can control you. "It is like heaping coals of fire on their heads" Then acquire joy and peace. I know it sounds like cliches, but it is true, and I don't know how else to say it.
Dr Dyer gives you the tools, to build a new house. Or should I say, he reminds you of the house that has been there all along. Only the expressions are original, the thoughts lie within us all.
