Design with Type was first published in 1952 and appeared in this multi–award-winning revised edition in 1967, which was the first Canadian work to be named Book of the Year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). Its author, Carl Dair (1912–1967) was one of Canada’s best-known and most celebrated type compositors and designers.

An invaluable tool

There's a reason why Carl Dair's book has been continuously in print since it was first published in the '50s. It's one of the best introductions to the idea of contrast in design: contrast of size, contrast of weight, contrast of position, and so on. And it's visually inspiring itself, despite being a small, square, one- and two-color volume. Recent printings have unpleasantly tight bindings, but it's still a classic, and one of the best available tools for typographic design.

Nice introduction to type use

For some reason Canada seems to produce spectacular typographic writers. I'd never read this book before, but encountering it for CDN5.00 a few years back, I figured I may as well pick it up. Good decision. It's a very well-written book indeed.

The Justly Famous Typographer's Graphic Design Bible

This book is, as everyone is saying, the acme of the study of design using type as a graphic element rather than just for making words. No we don't use type much any more but the lessons this book teaches are valued by thousands and I recommend the book to all would-be web designers as a valuable resource on layout.

However, I'm docking a star because of the following presentation issues:

The book is too small - it could easily have been reproduced at twice its size and saved the old eyeballs, which will be working overtime with this book as it is all about what things *look* like.

The binding should be a "lay flat" one, such as a spiral, rather than pefect binding which will require housebricks to keep the (small) pages open while you work.

The (tiny font) main text has been confined to a square that is laid out on the lower left of the page - acres of whitespace surround it that will eventually hold examples of typeface use. Unfortunately, this very 60s layout means on every other page the text will snuggle up to that binding. It looks awkward and is hard to read without breaking the spine if one's hands are both doing something else. Also, the hyphen used to continue words over multiple lines is vertical whereas hyphens used in the body of the text are horizontal, as usual. I found this to be annoying rather than eclectic. Your mileage will vary.

About the Author

Rita M. Bean, PhD, is Professor Emerita in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, she taught at the elementary school level and also served as a reading supervisor for grades K-12. Dr. Bean has developed elementary and middle school reading curriculum materials and has published in many different journals and monographs on the topics of reading curriculum; assessment and instruction in reading; professional development; and the role of reading specialists and literacy coaches (K-12). Dr. Bean developed and directed a program at the University of Pittsburgh that places certified teachers in classrooms for a year to serve as reading specialist interns while they take the coursework required for the reading specialist certificate. She served as Director of the Reading Center at the University for 25 years. During the past 5 years, she conducted research on the role of literacy coaches in schools and their role in improving literacy instruction. Dr. Bean is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame and served as a member of the Board of the International Reading Association (IRA) from 2003 to 2006. She was Chair of the IRA’s Commission on the Role of the Reading Specialist, which resulted in a position statement approved by the Board; she also served as Chair of the IRA Standards 2010 Committee for Specialized Reading Professionals. Dr. Bean received the University of Pittsburgh’s Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award and the University’s Distinguished Service Award for her community and outreach efforts in improving literacy.

Reading Specialist

This is a good book if you are a Reading Specialist in a school or school system. It is easy to understand, and contains excellent practical suggestions.

It is not a good choice if you are looking for a resource to use as a study guide for the PRAXIS II Exam 0300, even though the title might imply that it would be a help. The book assumes that the reader knows everything that the test would be covering. This book addresses how to apply what a Reading Specialist knows to her work in the classroom,school, and community. Good book--but not a study guide.

"The Reading Specialist: Leadership for the Classroom, School, and Community" is a guide for teachers who are responsible with helping readers of any grade level face their problems with literacy. This second edition emphasizes secondary school problems more thoroughly, and gives many tips on coaching readers. "The Reading Specialist" is a must for any educator who is charged with helping students getting up to the skill they need to succeed in academics.

He doesn't just survey the history of the war on drugs and its targeted population within the inner cities of America, he views it through the prism of an artistic form that both reflects and comments on the conflict between law and urban society. We learn about the genesis of a n art form that has been embraced and commoditized in white mainstream America. It's stunning achievement by an extremely bright and relevant scholar.

This book was used in my college English Lit. class to help students be more critic of things that they read, whether it be a textbook or a magazine article. Most of the essays in the book have major flaws. The one that I remember the best was written by Dick Clark and was about Elvis Presley. Clark makes the comment that Elvis didn't write his own songs, which is untrue (as blanket statements tend to be). Anyway, Elvis wrote at least 2 hits, one with Vera Matson (Love Me Tender) and another with Otis Blackwell (Don't Be Cruel).
Though many of these essays are poorly written, this is a good textbook for developing with critical reading skills.

Mirror On America = P.O.S.(negative connotation)

Obviously, most of these writers spent too much time in front of the mirror while blabbing on about nothing, after having read these essays. They go on and write about blatant issues, most of them have too much time on their hands. They go on and blab about nothing. These essays shouldn't be given the light of day. Do not attempt to read or buy this book. Don't even give it a glimpse at the bookstore or library. It is not worth your precious time. It certainly wasted mine, only because I had to use this book for my Composition II course in college. It is that bad, and not worth a single penny. Mirror On America is nothing more than a piece of "FILL IN YOUR WORD."
