October 24, 1944: As World War II raged, six young American torpedo bombers were sent on a search-and-destroy mission in the Sibuyan Sea. Their target: the superbattleship Musashi, the pride of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The pilots were tasked with preventing the immense enemy warship from inflicting damage on American supply ships. Little did these men know that they had embarked on the opening round of history’s greatest—and last—epic naval battle.
 
Two bomber crews launched in the first wave of attackers were shot out of the sky. Only pilot Will Fletcher survived the crash landing. Adrift at sea, Will made his way to land and escaped into the jungles of the Philippines, where he eluded capture by the Japanese with the help of Filipino guerrillas, whose ranks he joined to fight against their common enemy.
 
Intrepid Aviators is the thrilling true story of these brave bomber pilots, their daring duel with the Musashi, and Will Fletcher’s struggle to survive as a guerrilla soldier. The sinking of Musashi inflicted a crucial blow in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and marked the first time in history that aviators sank a Japanese battleship on the high seas.

About the Author
Gregory G. Fletcher served as a naval aviator from 1969 to 1974, and is now a practicing attorney. He is the son of USS Intrepid pilot Will Fletcher, who was awarded a Navy Cross of heroism for his actions in World War II.

Excellent Account of a USN Torpedo Bomber Squadron at War!

Though Navy torpedo bomber squadrons played a major role in the Allied victory in the Pacific, such units haven't received their due in print, histories of VT squadrons being few and far in between. Gregory Fletcher's newly-published INTREPID AVIATORS, however, presents readers with a rare, detailed portrait of one such squadron - VT-18 - as it waged war across the Pacific in 1944.

In INTREPID AVIATORS, Fletcher, a gifted writer, skillfully weaves three storylines to produce a compelling account of carrier combat in the Pacific. Most prominently, INTREPID AVIATORS is the story of Fletcher's father, Willard M. Fletcher, a VT-18 Grumman Avenger pilot assigned to Air Group 18 on board CV-11 in 1944. Along with describing his father's service with VT-18, Gregory Fletcher details Air Group 18's combat record while on board USS Intrepid. Interwoven with those story elements is Fletcher's account of the ever-evolving American and Japanese strategies that shaped combat in the Pacific, strategies that eventually resulted in Will Fletcher and other Air Group 18 aircrew attacking the Japanese super-battleship Musashi on 24 October 1944 in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea.

Aside from being an exciting account of young men at war, INTREPID AVIATORS furnishes a wealth of information on carrier ops circa 1944, shipboard life, etc. The book shifts back and forth between American and Japanese participants to give an informed and well-rounded picture of unfolding events.

Bottom line: INTREPID AVIATORS is a great read. The reader gets to know Will Fletcher and his squadronmates as living, breathing human beings, young men barely out of their teens who found themselves waging a pitiless war over the vast Pacific distances. INTREPID AVIATORS is a fine tribute to the squadron, air group and the carrier they flew from. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Tribute to WW II Naval Aviators

I have a long standing interest in World War Two military aviation and regard this as one of the very best books I've ever read about the subject.The descriptions of carrier flight operations couldn't be more vivid and realistic, and do an excellent job of conveying the stress and tension of the daily lives of the pilots and aircrewmen.
The squadron chronicled in this book richly deserved to have it's story told. Of twenty eight pilots embarked, fifteen won the Navy Cross. One of them was the author's own father, and he deserves great credit for relating his father's exploits with such matter of fact objectivity.The story of the elder Mr. Fletcher's shoot down and eventual rescue practically merits a book of it's own.
I do note a couple of errors that World War Two naval aviators would have caught. Student pilots flew their trainers from the cockpit where they would fly when soloing. In the case of the Stearman, this places the student in the rear cockpit with the instructor up front, not the other way around. Also, the outstanding SNJ trainers flown by the Navy in WW II were built by North American, not Boeing.The two companies were eventually combined in a corporate merger in the 1990s but this was fifty years after the wartime aircraft were built. These minor mistakes are easily corrected in a second printing and would raise an outstanding book almost to the level of perfection.
I wish the author's father could have lived to see the book in print - highly recommended.

Great WWII Book

I've seen many movies and read many stories about operations in the Pacific, but I have never read anything quite like this. The author brought the pilots to life and treated them with such respect. I have always know it is difficult to fly from an aircraft carrier, but this book does a great job of explaining the technical side of flying from a ship without boring the reader to tears. There is a great combination of technical detail, individual story lines and overall historical context. Well worth the time to read.

Athol Kay is an innovative thinker, humorist and family man with a one track mind. Wives - You want that giddy feeling you used to have for your hubby? Buy this book for your husbands!

Coming from a woman's perspective, this book hit RIGHT ON with the problems I was having being attracted to my husband. It actually tells men how to make their wives want them. It's written by a man, for men, and I appreciated that because the author gave examples with his own relationship with his wife on his daily interactions that work to help her lust after him. It made it much more concrete and real-life to us as the readers.

Not only does the book talk about why I was feeling less attracted to my very physically fit, tall, extremely athletic, highly intelligent, well-maintained, loving husband, but it gave specific steps for him to take in order to make me go crazy for him again. I had no idea it was as easy as him becoming more of an alpha-male at home with me. I knew I wanted him to be more assertive in the bedroom and generally in our married life together by making more or most of the decisions such as where we're going to eat or what we're going to do this weekend, but no matter how many times and ways I tried to tell him this, it didn't seem to compute because he's so polite with me and that's how he showed me love. This book not only explains to a man why and how to be assertive with women, but also has anecdotes of the author's personal relationship with his wife on little playful interactions and flirtation that a lot of men like my husband didn't do and didn't think to do. The author was able to put into words and communicate to my husband in a fun, comical way, what I could not, in explaining what I really wanted and needed in a man.

Be forewarned, the author sort of blames women for their unhappiness in the marriage and points the finger at women for helping to "create" men they won't desire. It wasn't until I read further, that I had to agree with him. I am one of those women who thought that by "training" my husband to do more chores around the house and by getting him to be more domesticated, nurturing and sensitive in our relationship, I'd be happier. Even though it's clear the book is meant for men to read, I couldn't help but read most of it myself. I decided to stop reading about 80 pages from the end because I didn't want to know, in advance, what alpha "sex moves" my husband may try on me. I love surprises! I must also say that just the act of reading the book turned me on to my husband more before he even attempted the new improved alpha-male with me.

This book concentrates on telling you the truth and giving you common sense, logical solutions to the problems. It may not be what appeals to some women's sensitivities and feminist-minded viewpoints. In other words, it's not politically correct, but I liked that! I've read those types of books and nothing helped my situation. I truly believe my husband needed to be "de-programmed" from the feminist mindset he was raised in and made to understand that his instincts about how to take the lead and give a few orders as the head of the family with our kids as well as with me, while also showing me his love (which he already knew very well how to do, are natural and good for our relationship. Don't get the wrong impression. The author isn't condoning any kind of abuse or jerk mentality, he's just stating the facts - that most women want and need to be dominated in their sexual relationships in order to be truly content and turned on sexually.

I plan on recommending this book to any and all of my friends complaining about their relationships / marriages. It really was a life-saver!

Fantastic Book

This is one of the most liberating books I have ever read. Pop culture would have males believe that speaking up for themselves and being a leader is somehow demeaning to women.

The feminist movement has for too long purported that the sensitive male is what women really want. They do. Everyone needs emotional closeness. But women also want men to be men. Women want men to lead. Testosterone is not the evil that the pop psychologists would have you believe. Being a man is not about demeaning or dominating or abusing your mate. It is about being a leader.

My wife is an immensely talented highly valuable career woman. Yet she wants me to be the leader at home.

The book gives married men good advice on being a better leader at home.

May have saved my marriage.

I don't remember exactly how I cam across this book, I think I found Athol's blog and ordered the book from there, but I know that my wife and I have been having ongoing problems for years and I was ready to get out.

Enter the Married Man Sex Life Primer 2011. I blasted through the book in two days, Athol's style is informal and accessible (most of the content is modified from the blog) that makes this book an easy read despite a ton of content.

After reading the book I realize that being the "nice guy" husband isn't enough to get my needs met in the marriage and have started the "plan" to bettering myself. My wife responded positively almost immediately, but was confused at how abrupt the change was. I'm in a constant battle with myself right now, trying to undo years worth of self-defeating behaviors that I thought would help. Trust me, it's worth it.

Guys, I can not recommend this book highly enough. Athol provides a fresh new way of looking at your relationship and gives biological, evolutionary, and otherwise completely rational explanations for how relationships work.

If your wife has shut down on you and you're feeling trapped, the problem may not be that you just aren't doing enough housework, like I've seen other books recommend, but that you aren't giving your wife a man that is worth being attracted to.

In sum, if you're willing to put forth some effort, this book works. If you aren't getting what you want out of the marriage, try this first. It will save you a ton of money that you'll be spending on hookers or lawyers.

About the Author

As an MI6 field officer, Matthew Dunn recruited and ran agents, coordinated and participated in special operations, and acted in deep-cover roles throughout the world. He operated in environments where, if captured, he would have been executed. Dunn was trained in all aspects of intelligence collection, deep- cover deployments, small arms, explosives, military unarmed combat, surveillance, and infiltration.

Medals are never awarded to modern MI6 officers, but Dunn was the recipient of a rare personal commendation from the secretary of state for work he did on one mission, which was deemed so significant that it directly influenced the success of a major international incident.

During his time in MI6, Matthew conducted approximately seventy missions. All of them were successful. He currently lives in England, where he is at work on his next novel.

I am a fan of Matthew Dunn books. I read all three of his full-length books and thought that the latest was very good. Therefore I bought this short eleven chapter book. While the publicity for the book states that it is dated 2014, the book seems to me to be an early writing of this master writer of spy fiction. There were too many attempts at humor which sounded sophomoric. The book was too verbose; it was not tightly written. The hero of the tale did not act as he does in other books and neither does his CIA handler. The hero also did things that did not seem reasonable. I also disliked the ending.

On The Trail of A Killer

MI6 agent Will Cochrane has a man after him known only as Trapper. He'd escaped from a base in the Middle East after announcing he was going to kill Will. Will's handlers wanted out of the way and safe.

But Trapper had somehow got hold of his cell number and was taunting him with phone calls.

Will has to get away from the CIA safe house and fins this man first.

Recommended for lovers of spy fiction.

To short. I find myself reading backwards. Did not have first book. Still I find it interesting! You are a very good writer. Makes one wonder what is really going on out there in the world.
