A great bargain for priceless ideas

Creativity and Problem Solving

We are all geniuses according to Brian Tracy, with the proper training we can all come up with new and exciting ideas to improve our companies and our lives. In his new small but very powerful and thought provoking book Tracy shows how we can put our minds to work thinking and coming up with new ideas.
In one chapter he writes about the seven sources of innovation and how these sources promote creative thinking: Here are a few examples to whet your appetite:
The Unexpected Event: When something happens a problem or an opportunity that makes us think that much harder, focusing on this new issue to overcome the challenge or take advantage of the opportunity. He demonstrates this by showing us how Peter Omidyar wanting to sell his large Pez candy dispenser collection realized that there was not good auction site he could go to son he created E-Bay.
Process Need: When you need to improve process or technology to overcome an industry challenge, like when Tom Monaghan wanted to know why pizzas could not be delivered in less than thirty minutes and found a unique process change to make it happen.
Demographic Changes: Think of all the news products that are being developed as the baby boomers enter retirement age. This is a perfect example of demographic changes.
Tracy encourages us via 21 short but pertinent chapters to use our minds to solve our problems.
What I like about this book is that you cannot but spend four or five minutes reading it and your mind starts to whir with new insights and ideas. The book is just crammed full of what I would call mind triggers designed to make you think and create. He spends time talking about “Mindstorming Method” how they should be run, how many people should participate and how long is long enough for these to be effective.

This is one of the volumes in the Brian Tracy Success Library, all published by AMACOM. Tracy has already written one or more books of greater length and depth that examine these and other major business subjects. What he has now done with each of the volumes in the series is to condense with consummate skill the most valuable information, insights, and counsel within a 100-page format, in this instance the most valuable lessons he has learned about creative or innovative problem solving.

Briefly but substantially, Tracy covers essentials of that include The Root Sources of Creativity, Three Triggers to Creativity, Mind-Stimulating Exercises, Practice Lateral Thinking, Practice Zero-Based Thinking, The Value-Engineering Principle. He again em ploys a format that frames 21 key elements that can be involved in a process to produce creative or innovative solutions to especially serious problems or answers to especially challenging questions. Sometimes an entirely new solution or answer is needed. Other times, the best solution or answer may well be a refinement or development of a solution or answer that is no longer sufficient. More often than not, such a problem or question resembles a puzzle whose solution or answer can be revealed only by obtaining the right pieces and then assembling them in proper order.

Readers will appreciate Tracy's provision of an "Action Exercises" section at the conclusion of each chapter. I strongly recommend that a lined notebook be kept near at hand in which to record comments, questions, and page references as well as completion of the exercises. It also makes sense to highlight key passages in the book. Doing all this will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of material later.

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, we have a Farmer's Market area at which merchants offer slices of fresh fruit as samples of their wares. In that spirit, I now provide Peter Drucker's list of "The Seven Sources of Innovation" that racy discusses ion Chapter Eighteen:

1. The Unexpected Event "is often the breakthrough innovation that changes an entire industry."

2. Incongruity "is the reality of what is and what 'out' to be."

3. Process Need that, when developed or improved, "would allow you to serve your customers better, faster, cheaper, or more conveniently than your competitors."

4. Changes in industry structure such as "the introduction of the Apple iPhone in 2006 which purred Samsung into the market with its Android-based smartphones."

5. Demographic Changes such as "the population movement from high-tax, high-regulation states to low-tax, low-regulation states" such as Texas with no personal income tax and a business-favorable regulatory system.

6. Changes in Values and Perceptions such "a much greater emphasis on health foods and fitness today than there was in the last generation."

7. New Knowledge, "both scientific and nonscientific, creates new economic trends, opportunities, and even completely new industries."

I agree with Tracy that almost anyone can develop the skills to make decisions that are much more creative or innovation. In their classic book, Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All, Tom Kelley and David Kelley observe: "As brothers who have worked together for thirty years at the forefront of innovation, we have come to see [various] misconceptions as 'the creativity myth.' It is a myth that far too many people share. This book is about the opposite of that myth. It is about what we call 'creative confidence.' And at its foundation is the belief that we are [begin italics] all [end italics] creative...Creative confidence is a way of seeing that potential and your place in the world more clearly, unclouded by anxiety and doubt. We hope you'll join us on our quest to embrace creative confidence in our lives. Together, we can all make the world a better place."

This book is Brian Tracy's substantial contribution to an operational manual that explains HOW. Also, as is true of each of the other volumes in The Brian Tracy Success Library, the price at which Amazon now sells this volume ($9.95) is not a bargain; it's a steal.

About the Author
Steven Clavey studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in both Taiwan and China,testing in the top 30 out of 1800 students on the Chinese written examinations when studying for certification in TCM gynecology. He has been a consultant to the Australian government on matters relating to Chinese medicine, and was appointed by the federal Minister of Health to the Traditional Medicines Evaluation Committee, a committee which reviews the licensing of herbal products. He continues to be actively involved in teaching, the translation of Chinese medical texts and clinical practice, and he has published articles about Chinese medicine in both English and Chinese.

Very Factual Book

This Is a great book to have as part of your TCM library. It gives an in depth discussion of its topic and is one of the few books in TCM specialising in Phlegm, Damp and the movement of Fluids, so it is a must to have as part of one's on-going TCM knowledge.

This book gives you a lot idea of understanding in oriental medicine. It bring to you real taste of classics especially huang di nei jing and nan jing.The majority books of oriental medicine in English don't give us real picture of oriental medicine, but the book does!! One thing I want to wish is when they using pin yin, should be accompained chinese character. Great book!!!!

One of the best books available on TCM

This book is excellent. For the advanced student or practitioner, this book enlightens the reader on all aspects of Fluid, Jin-ye, Phlegm, Dampness, and their origins. It also discusses herbs in a very interesting and useful way, comparing and contrasting phlegm and damp herbs and their specifics. This is my favorite theory book on my shelf.

Nice and accurate.

Cannot believe I found such a nice compilation of Vince's work. Vince, and underrated guitarist, writes from the heart but plays from the soul. Already been working on a couple pieces from this book and it's great. Not easy though, a good knowledge of hybrid picking, chicken picken, and general theory will help. Good stuff, looking forward to learning some of these.

An engrossing, compulsively readable history of the late-night television show, from the early struggle to get it accepted by the network to its most recent incarnation with the return of original producer Lorne Michaels. The book is well written and detailed, and the authors interviewed more than 200 people connected with the show. Most interesting are the first few seasons, when Saturday Night was truly innovative and blessed with the Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time Players and more daring writers. Excerpts from skits punctuate the text, and most are still funny. As the show loses its cult status and goes big-time, however, the story becomes a depressing account of rampant egotism, drug abuse, and, ultimately, the end of SNL 's originality and excitement. Great stuff for long-time SNL fans!

This is one of the best behind-the-scenes books I've ever read. Published in 1986, it detailed the first ten seasons of SNL. This isn't a sanitized, cast-only, everybody's-wonderful book, but it's not a gossipy tell-all, either. There's a lot of great stories about all the people on both sides of the camera who put the show on week after week. There are great chapters on how the show got on the air in the first place (they even needed an OK from Johnny Carson), and the battles the show fought with censors, critics, even the White House. And there are chapters devoted to the shows four breakout stars--Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy. Hill and Weingrad are clearly fans of the show, but they're still merciless when discussing the show's low points, particularly the 1980-81 season. There are detailed examinations of many of the show's milestones, including a 1978 show with Steve Martin that's still considered one of the series' best. If you remember watching the show back when the Coneheads, the Blues Brothers, and the Nerds were the hottest thing on the tube, you'll want to track down this book. And I'd dearly love these authors to put out a volume II chronicling the last dozen years of the show.

As entertaining as the show itself (the good episodes)

An excellent book, in terms of its breadth and the behind-the-scenes perspective it gives to the Saturday Night Live episodes we have all seen on TV. The writers certainly did their homework, and yet the scores of names, dates, and places mentioned never bog down the flow of this story. It is fascinating to read about the clashes between these stars who were both comic geniuses and petulant egomaniacs, and frankly, it is surprising that any episodes were able to air at all. Despite what you think about Saturday Night Live, you cannot deny the show's existence as a television institution, and reading this book makes you appreciate its innovation then, and longevity now, all the more.

Like many, I grew up watching Saturday Night Live, either new episodes or those rerun on various cable channels, marveling at the wonderful humor and originality. I had always heard urban legends surrounding the show, and its earliest moments, and when I discovered this book I knew I had to read it. The authors take you through the first several seasons of the show, showing the reader many aspects of the backstage history, from the dynamics between Lorne Michaels and the cast to the use of drugs in the early days. There are many anecdotes from tales involving the Hell's Angels to the trip Chevy Chase made to the White House to lampoon President Ford, and all of the early greats are covered from Belushi, Murphy, and Chase to O'Donoghue, Franken, and Davis. I laughed recalling many of the skits that are presented in this book, and I sit amazed as I read about many of the sorrowful topics including the decline of Garret Morris and Larraine Newman. This book is older and dated, and many of the actors that were predicted to go into obscurity have resurfaced since publication and have seemingly came into there on. It's very light hearted, even given some of the darker topics, and it is a fairly quick read as it is written in an anecdotal style. Read this book and enjoy.
