**This was my Recommended Read for October 2007!**

Miranda Albright has a secret. Actually, more than one secret - but it all started when she first spied her decadent neighbor making love to a woman on the grounds of his estate. Although innocent, the young Miranda was captivated by the sight, and found herself drawn irresistibly back to the spot summer after summer when the handsome Earl was in residence at his country estate to spy on him and his various lovers.

Now Miranda's family is in dire straits financially and the only way she can save them is to offer her innocence to the Earl himself, Ethan Hamon. But Ethan wants more than her innocence. He wants her available to him for his debauchery for three entire months, to play with at his sensual whim. Little does he realize that before it is over, the sweet Miranda will have snared him heart and soul.

Sometimes a book resonates with you so strongly, but you cannot quite place your finger on what exactly about the story struck you so. For me, Jess Michaels' new book Everything Forbidden is just such a novel. Yes, the characters are compelling, the romantic dynamic is absolutely heart-wrenching at times, and the plot is entertaining.

But there is more to this story than just those elements. The way Michaels puts it all together makes you feel every moment as if you are in the book yourself. She builds empathy for all of her characters with seeming ease, and the book becomes more than just a story, at least while you are reading it.

It might be said that there are only so many tales to be told in the world, and while this may be true, the difference in a good story and a great story is the authors ability to make me forget I have ever before seen a similar plot. Jess Michaels has done just that with this book.

Ethan is a captivating leading man cast as a hero tormented with convictions that he can never have what his heart desires most. Breaking through his walls proves difficult, but not impossible for a heroine with the tenderness and spunk of the beautiful Miranda.

Miranda Albright is unable to forget the day she caught her family's neighbor, Ethan Hamon, the Earl of Rothschild, seducing his current lover. That image has stayed with her for three years providing Miranda with the courage to deliberately seek out the earl just to spy on him with his lovers.

Miranda's idyllic spying must come to an end however, when her family falls on hard times with the death of her father. Not only are they penniless, but Miranda has younger sisters that need a Season in order to find a husband. Unable to finance their seasons, Miranda has no choice but to make a decision that changes her life. She goes to her virile next door neighbor and offers the only thing of value she has in return for helping her sisters--her virginity and three months of any sexual pleasure of his choice.

Vowing not to let her heart get involved, Miranda enters into the relationship with Ethan having no concept of the sinful and sensuous times ahead. Slowly falling under his spell, Miranda knows that her time with Ethan is limited. When he asks the one thing of her she can't give, her sorrow knows no bounds. Denying herself the only man she will ever love, Miranda vows to continue on--if only she can convince her heart.

I can not stop thinking about EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN and the way the characters related to each other. I have always been intrigued by the English societal hierarchy and the laws relating to females. Women such as Miranda actually didn't have a choice, heaven forbid, after their fathers and husbands were no longer around to provide for them. While some might fault Miranda for her proposition to Ethan, I found her choice to be a no-brainer. She had watched this man make love and seduce women for years so she knew he would agree. She had guts and when she loved, she loved entirely.

Ethan's character is more complex. The product of a hell raising and promiscuous father who watched his mother drink herself to death, Ethan's heart was hardened against finding a wife and love. That is, until he met a tiny sprite of a woman named Miranda.

EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN by Jess Michaels soothed my historical loving soul. Add in romance mixed with sensuous and forbidden pleasures and Jess Michaels now has a fan for life.

Something for Everyone

What a breath of fresh air, just as Spring begins.While the book mentions ideas for women, there are plenty of suggestions that men and women of all ages can use to being practicing more justice and mercy in our families and in the world.

The women's stories are moving and thought-provoking. I found the resource lists extremely helpful. My first "testing of the waters" was to go to [...]. This is a vocabulary site where each answer you get right, the site donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. How easy to do from the comfort of your easy chair. I discovered that some of our local schools are using the site as well. Resources can be as simple as this, but also offer more challenging and personal outreach suggestions.

A great book at a time when so many in our world need and deserve mercy and justice.

A thought-provoking read

My wife and I are in a season of life in which we have to carefully consider our giving. A friend recommended this book to us and, although it is written with a female audience in mind, it was tremendously helpful to me. One reason it was so helpful is that it is practical. Many chapters list specific resources including websites and email addresses. Even though we are already supporting several causes and ministries, it gave us new ideas for ways we can serve those ministries beyond financial support. Another reason it was helpful is that it is incredibly positive. Amber rightly points out that giving is a truly life-enriching practice...that sometimes takes practice! The worn out adage "It is better to give than to receive" takes on fresh life in the context of "Mercy Rising".

My favorite aspect of the book is the interjected stories. These are real-life examples from "real-life" people about how giving affected them. Time, energy, resources, emotions - these people poured themselves out for others and found new joy in their lives because of it. I highly recommend reading "Mercy Rising" but warn that your attitude about serving others might never be the same.

Dry diplomatic history

I eagerly bought this book because it's probably the only one dealing with the Sino-vietnamese war of 1979 as its main theme. Although it contains a very thorough overview of the political and diplomatic relations of the two countries from 1947 to 1979, analysing many issues ranging from the Chinese community in Vietnam to the US-Chinese and Soviet-Vietnamese relations, the actual military operations of the war are covered in only 16 pages of a single chapter (number 5). The writing is also completely dry, reminding official diplomatic report. For someone who's looking for a better military account I would recommend "PLA Warfighting" which is much more detailed on the subject, and also "Brother Enemy" by Nayan Chanda which has an easily read narrative, albeit it focuses on the Vietnam invasion of Cambodia (December 1978 - January 1979).

Most complete DJ instructional book I've read

I loved this book! There has never been a more complete book written on this subject i have read. It will teach you about gear, music, techniques, business advice, and the industry as a whole. If you have never touched DJ gear, you will learn everything you need to start doing gigs. If you have DJ'd for a while like I have, you will pick up great tips to rejuvenate your love of it. Really fun read!

Completely worth the money!

I started DJing in 2010. I literally saw a cool DJ video on YouTube and decided it would fun. The next day I found myself at a music store and after 3 hours purchased a controller (outside of my budget and not what I needed in the least). I had to figure out everything - where to get music; how to organize it; how to hook up everything; how to get gigs. There was so much trial and error. This book really compresses years worth of experience into an easy to digest format. I really wish this was available when I started.

Disrespectful to the Gibson bass

I wrote a email to Bacon and Moorhouse detailing my reasons for the above title. I own alot of Gibsons and Epiphones been playing out and in for over 30 years. They talk very little on the great Gibsons and the large list of known players of Gibsons, they pretty much state that the Tbird was all Gibson could do right. If i could have looked at it before buying I wouldnt have bought it. Should have been called "The Fender Bass Book", uninformed or definitely biased big time.

Not Just for Bassists - It's Great for Any Rock Fan!

This book follows the format of Mr. Bacon's other books (including The Fender Book and The Gibson Les Paul Book), and like his other books, it is a treat for the eyes. The photography is absolutely fantastic, with amazing detail. What is especially impressive is his inclusion of instruments owned by the stars who made them famous. It's not just a picture of a Hofner "Beatle Bass", it's one of Paul McCartney's Beatle Basses; it's not just a picture of an Alembic bass, it's John Entwistle's famous Alembic "Spider" bass from his days with The Who (and the list goes on and on...). Like Mr. Bacon's other guitar books, there's a pretty good identification guide in the back. Is this book REALLY a complete story of the electric bass with minute detail about every instrument of note (how's THAT for a pun)? Nah. If that's what you want, then consider this a "3 star" book at best (although you WILL learn something if you read it). On the other hand, is it a nice addition to one's own music library or a great gift book? Absolutely! (By the way - the ONLY reason I didn't rate it five stars is that the author tries, in my opinion, to cover too broad a subject matter in too short a space.) This is one of those books that's a lot of fun, even if it's just to "look at the pictures".

About the Author
Melanie Hawthorne is Professor of French at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, with special emphasis on prose fiction of the "Decadent" period and on women writers.

Liz Constable is Associate Professor in the Women and Gender Studies program at UC Davis. Her primary research areas focus on late nineteenth-century and twentieth century French and Francophone Cultural Studies and Film. She has published widely in these areas, including articles on Simone de Beauvoir and French women decadent writers.

Fascinating and Disturbing

This book was first published with a preface that warned the reader to beware such a novel, for it is the fantasy of an hysteric. If it weren't for the fact that early 20th century hysteria was debunked, this would be totally true. Monsieur Venus is a crazy trip into the mind of a woman who wishes to assume the role of a man, without biologically changing anything about herself.

The main character, Raoule de Venerande, falls in love with a young, attractive young artist named Jacques. Over the course of the novel, she progressively becomes more public with her wish to be considered a man, which ultimately culminates in one of the most shocking and disturbing endings I've ever seen - but one which in retrospect seems inevitable.

If you're interested in the role that gender plays in identity and have already done some background reading, then this is a great book to turn to.

"Monsieur" Venus, an intriguing depraved narrative

Rachilde wrote this novella when only 20. First published in 1884, it naturally caused an outrage at the time and even read in the 21st Century it is easy to see why. Raoule de Venerande is a wealthy aristocratic Parisian, both a cross dresser and domineering woman, who falls for Jacques Silvert, an androgynously beautiful young impoverished artist. The swapped gender roles of Rauole and Jacques forms the focus of the narrative. Baron Raitolbe, whose unrequited love for Raoule, is also under her bewitching powers. With the homo-erotic ending and the necrophyllic imagery, it is easy to understand this book's classification as Decadent.

This is one of my favorite books. Filled with societal role reversals and profound statements regarding a woman's place in the patriarchal world.
