Great size and exactly what I needed!

Great book, great size, exactly what I needed. Doesn't have pre printed dates so you can start at any point in the year. I'm going to spiral bind mine so I have a little more flexibility. Took a picture of the cover because some people were curious what it looks like, all in all I'm happy with it!

Changing my world one day at a time

I'm in Week 4 of this journal. I really like how this journal pushes me to think & feel more about each meal and snack; besides making me accountable for every bite I ingest. Discovered that I eat out of boredom and/or stress, when I'm forced to write WHY I ate what I ate. This journal has opened my eyes to portion control and emotions attached to food, as well as motivating me to exercise more (so I can get a big smiley face at the end of the day). It's not much, but so far I lost 1" off my waist. 6 more weeks to go!

Absolutely In Love

I'm just starting week four in my journal and I can honsetly say I probably would not have stuck with it if I didn't have this food journal. While I do agree it is a little big, (for me too big to carry around) it has all the key points I was looking for so I decided to go ahead and buy it. I'm so glad that I did. I have a small little notebook I keep in my lunch bag so I can write everything down then I just transcribe it over to my food journal when I get home from work.

I like the end of week summary. It helps me to keep focused and makes me think about my choices I made over the week.

Fabulous read

Reid has created a hero worth falling in love with and a heroine who is his perfect complement. Shaan is left at the altar by her handsome groom, Piers, who marries another woman. Piers' brooding brother, Rafe, steps in and convinces the devastated bride to marry him instead. Shaan is determined not to see the truth---that Rafe loves her deeply---because she is in a distraught haze over Piers' desertion and over her belief that Rafe is really in love with the woman Piers has married. Rafe uses whatever means necessary---bullying, coddling, spoiling---to restore Shaan's self-esteem and force her out of her despondency. The newspapers add to Shaan's unhappiness by reporting that the wealthy brothers have switched brides, which, coupled with other twists and turns, leads to a final confrontation involving the three major characters. Why did Piers leave? Does he love Shaan? Does Shaan love Rafe or will her heart forever belong to Piers? What is the relationship between Piers' wife and Rafe? What really caused all of these problems to begin with? This book keeps you turning page after page to discover the answers. The plot is delicious, the characters are very well-drawn and the book is incredibly satisfying. I dispose of most Harlequin books right after I read them. This one is a keeper. Buy it!

Strong writing, weak characters - 3.5 stars if I could

Pros:
- The writer is very skillful, and brings the locations (Hong Kong in particular) brilliantly to life and kept me invested enough in the story of two really damaged people to finish the book.
- The best friend character, who is the only sane person in the book, was fun to have around, if only as a novelty. For some reason in this kind of Harlequin novel (older Mediterranean man meets meek, mild virgin) there are almost never any decent parents, siblings or friends around- they tend to be populated by horrible people (my suspicion is that with a solid 60% of the genre having one person with a lick of sense around would make it impossible for the stories to happen as written).
- The setting was really dramatic and intense. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next- all credit is given to the writer for ensuring that.

Cons:
- The hero's actions are absolutely ridiculous. Him loving her from the beginning is sweet enough (I guess), but bullying a severely traumatized 22-year old into marriage is really heartless, no matter what the circumstances. I think that the setting merited a longer book, one which would have fully fleshed out the consequences of his actions instead of moving directly into the HEA (a la Susan Mallery- she does a GREAT job writing heroes who have to redeem themselves).
- I have to agree with another reviewer, the heroine really is spineless. I know she's traumatized, but to let the brother of the man who you feel ruined and defiled you take your life over makes absolutely no sense. At all. She has no ambitions and is totally content to let pretty much everyone else in the book run her life. She's pretty, but not particularly smart, savvy or in possession of large amounts of common sense. Total doormat.

I enjoyed reading this book, and even re-read it when I was done, so I could see if the ending stood up. It did. Unfortunately the hero and heroine just aren't really up to par- there is no way to cure the massive case of plot-convenient stupidity that the book rests on to keep moving. I'd recommend it if you love this author particularly, but otherwise you are ok taking a pass on this.

Gripping saga

The very first pages of this novel are emotionally gripping. The heroine is in shock at first and it takes some effort for the chivalrous brother of the absent groom to get some response. The storyline is interesting and well-thought out. Michelle Reid gives her characters very intense and identifiable emotions. I enjoyed this book very much.

I loved to know Warner and I got all my suspicions right about Adam.

I love to have this two short stories in one book!

Destroy me:

Well, well, I liked knowing Warner. To see in his soul and the world through his eyes.

Fav moment:
And I've fallen.

So hard.

I've hit the ground. Gone right through it. Never in my life have I felt this. Nothing like this. I've felt shame and cowardice, weakness and strength. I've known terror and indifference, self-hate and general disgust. I've seen things that cannot be unseen.

And yet I've known nothing like this terrible, horrible, paralyzing feeling. I feel crippled. Desperate and out of control. And it keeps getting worse. Every day I feel sick. Empty and somehow aching.

Love is a heartless bastard.

Fracture me:

Oh well... Adam head is nothing like Aaron, sorry to compare.

Fav moments:
When I thought James was dead. I was crying and then he was standing there! God!
And at the end when Kenji thanks Juliette is dead... Poor Kenji, I like him a lot, and he was crying! He was crying! He does not show emotion and he was crying!!!

More Warner Please!!!

I have to be honest, when I first read Shatter Me, I didn't like it much. The main character Juliette didn't connect with me and the two boys in the book also seemed bland. Out of the two boys, Warner was the more intriguing one, but he did some things that begged for more explanation. And boy...did it get explained in this novella. In Destroy Me, the first half of this bind up, we see everything through Warner's eyes. The story picks up during an integral part of Shatter Me, and it walks us through Warner's thoughts and feelings during parts of Shatter Me. The writing style by Ms. Mafi was also more concise, clearer than Shatter Me. And she's one of the few authors when writing in a male tone, can actually sound male. Warner surprised me in every way and I think anyone reading this series need to read Destroy Me.

Fracture Me also surprised me a little bit. I thought Adam's voice was a little bland...blander than he appeared in the regular books. He acted a little out of character for me but his part of the bind up made me want to hear more from him as well.

Best series this year!

It's March and I've already devoured more than 50 books. It takes a special story to keep me there days, weeks or months after I read them. The Shatter Me series continues to occupy my mind. I have never experienced writing like this, ever. It was poetic, musical, smooth and caressing. I loved everything about this book and all the others. The story, the characters, the writing and the feelings I experienced while reading

The Plague is easily one of the best ten novels ever written, far surpassing even the erstwhile classic The Stranger. Whereas we examine an uncommonly cold-hearted man in a normal world in the pages of The Stranger, in this novel it is a harsh outside world which closes in on a group of fascinating characters. It is in this much more developed context that Camus' most remarkable notions of humanity, life, and existence can be fleshed out and communicated more effectively. The lessons of good, normal lives in a world gone mad are much more instructive and meaningful than the observations in The Stranger of a man gone mad in a normal world.
A word to the wise: when large numbers of rats come out of the woodwork and commence dying nasty, bloody deaths in the streets and houses, something is definitely wrong. In the port city of Oran, the population ignores the signs of danger and only grudgingly admits that an epidemic, a form of the bubonic plague to be exact, has taken root in their city. The protagonist, Dr. Rieux, is a doctor who finally helps convince the authorities to take extreme measures in the interest of public safety and to eventually quarantine the entire town. Over the course of the novel, we get to observe the manner in which Dr. Rieux, his companions, and prominent men of the community react to the worsening plague and its social consequences. Dr. Rieux has just sent his unhealthy wife off to a sanitarium before the plague breaks out, and he must suffer her absence alongside the stresses of working 20+ hours a day trying to save people's lives while accomplishing little more than watching them die horrible deaths. Dr. Rieux's attempts to make sense of everything is a basic pulse of the story; an atheist, he cannot find happiness but goes on day after day fighting the disease with all his might because that is what he as a doctor is supposed to do. His friend Tarrou supplies much of the knowledge we glean about the reactions of society as a whole as month after month of isolation continues in the face of death's greedy fingers. His journal records small but important facts about all manner of men, yet he himself cannot be said to find ultimate peace. We first encounter M. Cottard after he has hanged himself and been saved before death. A criminal type yet not a bad man, his initial worries over inquiries into his suicide attempt fade away as the plague's grip on Oran tightens. He emerges from a self-imposed exile to actually become a communicating member of society; he alone seems to enjoy the plague because it makes everyone else like him, forced to live each day with the fear of a brooding, horrible fate. Then there is M. Grande, one of my favorite characters in all of literature. A simple civil service employee, he devotes himself to volunteer work computing plague statistics and the like while still continuing his fervent efforts at writing a novel. Grande's wife left him years earlier because he got too wrapped up in his work and lost the words to communicate his love for her; he began writing a novel in an attempt to find those words. With great devotion and commitment he works on his writing, determined to produce a perfectly crafted novel, one where each word is meaningful and necessary for the story--in short, one that will inspire the future publisher to introduce it to his publishing house cohorts with the phrase, "Hats off, gentlemen." After untold months of dedicated effort, Grande has yet to get the first sentence to sound exactly right; he engages all of his efforts into perfecting this one sentence, sure that the rest of the novel will fall into place after it is perfected.
These main characters are all fascinating character studies. Not all of them live to see the plague's end, but each of them struggles to find meaning in his own experience--e.g., one character continues living because that is what is required of human beings, to go on fighting for life in a meaningless world; another character seeks to become a saint of sorts by helping his fellow man fight the pestilence. The overriding message I was left with at the end is that life is worth living despite the arbitrary cruelties of an unforgiving world because there is more good in man than there is evil. I found that the book delivered in fact a rather darkly uplifting celebration of the human spirit; one's loved ones give life its meaning in a hostile world. The Plague succeeds in ways The Stranger never could because the characters in this novel are utterly human and represent diverse aspects of the lives of each of us.

Masterfully written description of human emotion during a time of suffering and tragedy. I found this book first as a pre-teen and I just re-read it as an adult. The rhythm and word choice is superb. I enjoyed every word from beginning to end.

Great book!

I took an ICS33 course and DeAnza College in Cupertino, CA ...called Chicano and the Arts. Our professor, Jorge Guevarra assigned this book (1 of 4) for our class. I used it throughout the Spring Quarter 2012. I loved this book. It helped me understand, interpret, analyze, and educate me on chicano CULTURE. Very informative. I learned alot from reading this book; culture clash, reform, adaptations, etc ....Everything comes alive!

All you need

I used this book, and this book only to prep for the CS examination, and I passed no problem. It gives about 60 "real style" cases for you to go over, complete with checklists for things you have to cover on history, on physical exam, and on discussion with the patient. It also has a great overview of what the test is about, how it's structured, and how you'll be scored. You can easily go over the cases alone, or even better while using a partner to act out the case and work out the timing you'll need during the actual examination (it goes fast).

It's a nebulous, difficult to prepare for examination, and I found this book extremely helpful. It's very difficult to actually sit down and study for an exam like this, so going over cases and practicing is probably the best thing you can do to get ready. This book's great for practicing, and I hope this was useful.

It's all you need

I got this book because I knew that my learning style was to work it out now and look back to see what I need to fix. Sure enough this book was great because I passed without a problem. This book is great because it presents a case as would be presented during the USMLE step 2 cs and gives you a a blank page to write down questions that you would want to ask the patient or physical exam testing that you would want to do. Once you are done with the question asking, you can compare your approach with that of the book's. I also found it helpful that the book explained why you may or may not want to ask certain questions. Granted that this is a free response type of testing, you may not necessarily find the answer to every single question you ask, but then again, not finding your question may just help you understand that it is not relevant to the case.
I also found it very helpful for such cases in which you perform just the physical exam. With the current patient presentation, you can ask yourself what you would do for the PE, and you can check the list provided in the book to see what you missed or need to work on. The list should give you an idea for what the testers look for, i.e. washing your hands with every encounter. Again, the book explains why certain exams need to be performed and what the PE testing abnormalities indicate.
This book is also great in that it helps to try to direct your thinking and your differential diagnosis for the most common presentations. When I took my USMLE, I actually had a lot of the same cases that were from the book, such as the sensorineural hearing vs conductive hearing loss cases. There was even a psychiatric case where I had to write a minimental status exam for the test.
I highly recommend this book if your learning style is the kinesthetic type, i.e you learn better with hands on situations rather than just sitting and reading a book.
